Wright’s practice has developed through a long standing preoccupation witdrawing, sculpting and painting from observation, through a concern to visually articulate the processes of perception and the psychological complexity which is present to the process. Wright’s understanding is that perception is inexorably bound to both a cultural, subconscious and subjective process of imaginative interpretation and projection.
Following undertaking an MA by Research in 2001 entitled 'Drawing, processes of conceptual modelling of landscape space' there was a significant and necessary shift to a more phenomenological approach, extending the drawing based practice into an exploration of digital and film based media. The initial interest in using time based media was to fulfil a basic aim of recording movement. However this elemental concern to record movement in the subject quickly developed into a concern with recording the more significant projection and movement of the gaze through a subject space. In particular Wright is interested in the kinaesthetic reading of movement, by which we imaginatively and empathetically read both actual and inferred movement in the body, the environment and plastic art works. Observation in this kinaesthetic sense is not solely the representation of appearance or symbolic representation but rather the graphic or cinematic trace of consciousness as it moves through space, reading and interpreting the weight, rhythm and movement of form and the movement of the interpretative gaze.
Wright states in relation to his practice ‘I do not so much find subjects as subjects find me, and the form they take follows their own logic. Each work is at some level a necessary internalisation and subsequent distillation to a visually poetic form’.
The shift in Wight’s practice to working with time based media coincided with working collaboratively with the Dutch artist Henri?tte van ‘t Hoog with whom Wright has engaged in experimental video and installation practice since 2006. They exhibit their collaborative works under the name of Wright & Van 't Hoog. Their practice explores the orchestration of video sequences to form abstract time based compositions. The edited video is constructed from short video observations of daily phenomena.

“荷兰风格派” 有一本同名杂志,自1917年由特奥·凡·杜斯伯格在莱顿市出版,直到1931年为全世界艺术家和理论家提供了理论依据。主题涵盖了从美术到建筑、设计到电影、音乐和文学等方方面面。在为“荷兰风格派运动” 撰写的首批系列文章中,蒙德里安阐述了大量对抽象艺术发展影响至深的观点。恰巧2017年是“风格派”成立一百周年的重要日子,为此,策展人精心策划了此展览。参加展览的有六位外国艺术家(其中二位为荷兰艺术家,一位为德国艺术家,一位为华裔德国艺术家,一位为英国艺术家,一位为乌克兰艺术家),五位为中国艺术家。有趣的是,五位中国艺术家都有留学背景。通过这个具有学术意义的展览,我们不仅可以了解当代抽象艺术家对传统抽象艺术源头之一“风格派”的传承与发展,还可看到中外抽象艺术家作品之间的碰撞交流。本次展览将持续到2019年5月5日,免费对公共开放。
“DE STIJL” has a magazine with the same name, which was published by Theo van Doesburg in Leiden in 1917, and it was not until 1931 that it provided theoretical basis for artists and theorists around the world, covering art, architecture, design, film, music, literature, etc. In the first series of articles written for “DE STIJL”, Mondrian elaborated on a number of points of view which have profound influences on the development of abstract art. Coincidentally, 2017 is an important year - the 100th anniversary of the “DE STIJL”, so the curator has made elaborate preparations for this exhibition. The participating artists come from China, the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain and from Ukraine. The interesting thing in the course of this is that all of the Chinese artists have oversea education background, too. Through the exhibition of academic significance, we can not only understand the inheritance and development of “DE STIJL” - one of the sources of traditional abstract art - by contemporary abstract artists, but also get in touch with the exchange and collision between Chinese and foreign abstract artworks. The exhibition will last until May 5th, 2019.
