这一时期，是新中国画日趋多元并走向繁荣的时代。新潮美术“全盘西化”的价值取向，激起了巨大的反拨思潮。1990年代伊始，以重新审视新中国画与传统的关系为前提，一场回归传统的浪潮在中国画领域乃至整个美术界展开，对传统的质疑、解构与颠覆，迅速转换为对传统的认同与景仰。笔墨论受到普遍的关注，一度成为中心话题，传统的写意精神、宇宙观、空间观也悄然复生。艺术家们既可以在跨文化的基础上广收博取，也可以从传统文化资源中寻找建构当代形态的依据，由此，渐次形成了新中国画的多元化格局。这一时期，也是中国艺术市场发端与迅速成长的时期。受惠于此，新中国画的创作空前繁荣。然而，市场也带来了庸俗化、炒作化等负面效应，这在一定程度上损害了新中国画的声誉与形象。(“新中国画”部分策展人张晓凌)

This period witnessed the growing diversity and prosperity of new Chinese painting. The “Omni-westernization” in modern fine arts triggered backlash in value orientation. From early 1990s, on the basis of reviewing the relations between new Chinese painting and tradition, a trend proposing the returning to tradition had spread in Chinese painting and into the whole art world. Question, deconstruction, and subversion of tradition had rapidly turned into appreciation and admiration. The theory emphasizing an art state beyond simple strokes had received wide attention and came to center stage. The traditional freehand spirit, worldview, and space concept also revived. Artists can learn across cultures, and at the same time can look for the basis to construct modern art form from the resources of traditional culture. Gradually, the diverse landscape of new Chinese painting has taken shape. This period is also the starting point of Chinese art market as well as the period of its rapid growth, thanks to which new Chinese painting has seen an unprecedented boom in talents and works. Nevertheless, commercialization also brought about vulgarity and kitsch, damaging the reputation and image of new Chinese painting. (Zhang Xiaoling)

此一时段前半期的重要艺术问题其实是80年代艺术问题的延续，但在后半期，随着各种探索方案的日趋成熟，逐渐出现了本土化的趋势，比如1996年在广州召开的“走向现代的水墨艺术研讨会”与相关报刊上，很多艺术家和批评家都谈到了相关问题。也就是说，很多艺术家与先前反传统的思维方式不同，开始注重吸收传统水墨的一些表现手法，以解决过分西方化的问题。其中，抽象水墨、表现水墨、新工笔画均有很好的表现；另一方面，因受西方当代艺术的影响，有艺术家更强调现实关怀的价值追求，并尝试将观念表达的元素代入水墨创作中。此外还有人则尝试做水墨装置，于是出现了一些更加新颖的解题方案与相关作品。(“新水墨”部分策展人鲁虹)

The first half of this period is an extension of the 80’s art concern. However, towards the latter half, the various exploration plans were becoming more mature and showing a tendency of localization. For instance, during the “Modernizing Ink Painting Art Seminar” held in Guangzhou in 1996, many artists and critics had published articles on such topics. Unlike the anti-traditional mindset, many artists have been trying to learn presentation techniques from traditional ink painting, to cope with the issue of over-westernization. Abstract ink painting, presentation ink painting, and new elaborate Chinese painting have all showed great performances. On the other hand, influenced by western contemporary art, some artists were emphasizing more on the value of caring for reality and trying to integrate idea-expression elements into ink painting creation. On top of that, some artists tried to create ink installations, which brought out more new solutions and art pieces. (Lu Hong)
