Today’s Ming Contemporary Art Museum (McaM) and its surrounding area once belonged to Zhabei District of Shanghai. In November 2015, this district was merged into Jing’an Disctrict. The term “Zhabei” which had been invented in late Qing Dynasty turned into a history. As a resident in Jing’an or in Shanghai, do you know that the term “Zhabei” refers to the north of the two sluice gates on Suzhou River? Can you understand the reservation of Zhabei Park at Jing’an District? At the beginning of the last century, Zhabei was one of Shanghai's industrial and commercial centers. However, more than 95% of the buildings were destroyed after the Japanese invasion and Zhabei has become a poor place in Shanghai since then. Generations were born and raised in this area. They strived for their life, had romantic stories and enjoyed old age together in former Zhabei District.
Theatre is a starting point of imagination. Shall we face up to all sorts of fractures due to the continuous changes, and retrace the texture of Zhabei with the enthusiasm of games, so that the story of people and space can be enriched, and the history can be established?
As a work of collective creation, "Zhabei Game" will be presented at Daning Road Subdistrict Community Service Center on 11th May and McaM on 12th May.
