2019年5月16日上午10点，由法国策展人丹尼尔·肯尼迪（Daniel Kennedy）策划的“万象（The air between things）：斯蒂芬·麦肯纳(Stephen McKenna)与伊莎贝尔·诺兰(Isabel Nolan)双人展”将在华侨城盒子美术馆开幕。本次展览由华侨城盒子美术馆主办，策展人丹尼尔·肯尼迪先生是法国Chateau La Costecurated的艺术总监。

华侨城盒子美术馆是广州美术学院油画系策划组运营的公共空间，旨在展出来自中国的艺术家及世界各地的艺术家的作品。美术馆以美术学院为研究和教育平台，努力整合区域和国际资源，体现高水准的艺术气质。华侨城美术馆于2017年9月正式开馆，美术馆拥有508平方米的宽敞展厅，其中包括四个标准大小的展厅。华侨城盒子美术馆为即将到来的展览选择了斯蒂芬·麦肯纳(Stephen McKenna)和伊莎贝尔·诺兰(Isabel Nolan)的作品，能展示当代爱尔兰艺术实践。柯林画廊很高兴协助组织这次公开展览，以在中国推广麦肯纳和诺兰的作品。

本次展览旨在通过对斯蒂芬·麦肯纳和伊莎贝尔·诺兰作品的题材和媒介的探索，推广他们的作品。展览将以动物生活、庆祝和寓言为主题。尽管出生于英国，但斯蒂芬·麦肯纳与爱尔兰有着深厚的渊源。从上世纪70年代起，麦肯纳就经常拜访他父亲的家乡多尼哥律师事务所(Co. "THE AIR BETWEEN THINGS: Stephen McKenna and Isabel Nolan", curated by The French curator Daniel Kennedy, will open at OCT Boxes Art Museum at 10am on May 16, 2019. The exhibition is hosted by OCT Boxes Art Museum and curated by Daniel Kennedy, artistic director of Chateau La Costecurated.

Boxes Art Museum is a public space run by The Oil Painting Department Curatorial Group of Guanzhou Academy of Art and aims to exhibit a wide range of international artists as well as artists from China. The Museum strives to integrate regional and international resources, manifesting in a high-standard of artistic temperament, relying on the Academy of Fine Arts as both research and educational platform. Opening in September 2017, Boxes Art Museum boasts an expansive exhibition hall with is 508 square meters, including four standard sized halls. Boxes Art Museum have selected the work of Stephen McKenna and Isabel Nolan for an upcoming exhibition, to showcase contemporary Irish art practice. Kerlin Gallery is delighted to assist in the organisation of this public exhibition, to promote the work of McKenna and Nolan in China.

This exhibition aims to promote the work of Stephen McKenna and Isabel Nolan through an exploration of their practices through genre and medium. The exhibition will look at themes of animal life, celebration and allegory. Though born in the UK, Stephen McKenna had a strong affiliation with Ireland. McKenna frequently visited his father’s native Co. Donegal from the 70s, before settling in Carlow in the late 90s. A former president of the RHA, McKenna and his work have been prominent in the Irish art scene over the past few decades. The exhibition will also highlight the great influence of McKenna’s practice on Isabel Nolan’s work. As an artist of a younger generation, Nolan’s practice draws from the legacy of McKenna and their friendship, while also incorporating diverse media.Nolan’s work is widely celebrated internationally, with previous works exhibited in China, America and Europe. Nolan represents a younger generation of Irish artists working in the contemporary arts.

The exhibition will close on July 12 and will be open to the public free of charge. During the exhibition, OCT Boxes Art Museum will hold several public education activities. The first activity will be held on May 18th, world museum day.

Stephen McKenna

b. 1939, London, UK; d. 2017, Carlow, Ireland.

A painter impervious to changing fashions, his work nonetheless achieved particular international prominence during the 1980s as part of the neo-classical strain of painterly postmodernism. Yet, for McKenna classicism is more a question of attitude than of subject matter. Overt pictorial references to classical antiquity gave way during the 1990s to a sophisticated exploration of the still life, the interior, the landscape and the seascape, rendering these scenes with great attention to the atmospheric conditions of light, air, space and water. He drew on the hard-won skills and knowledge of the history of painting to create contemporary works that intrigue and question, and have the wherewithal to stand the test of time.

McKenna's work is represented in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art; the Tate, London; the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin; Staedtische Sammlungen, Rheinhausen; Muse?es Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels; Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, Netherlands and in many other collections, both private and public, worldwide.

Recent solo exhibition:

MiMA, Middlesbrough (2014), travelling to Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane (2015); The Paradise [36], Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2013) and Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2012).

McKenna participated in Documenta 7 in 1982; Classical Spirit at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Falls the Shadow at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1986; Avant Garde of the '80s, Los Angeles County Museum of Modern Art in 1987 and Dreams & Traditions, at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C. in 1997. In 1986, he was nominated for the Turner Prize.

Isabel Nolan

b. 1974, Dublin, Ireland.

Isabel Nolan has an expansive practice that incorporates sculptures, paintings, textile works, photographs, writing and works on paper. Her subject matter is similarly comprehensive, taking in cosmological phenomena, religious reliquaries, Greco-Roman sculptures and literary/historical figures, examining the behaviour of humans and animals alike. These diverse artistic investigations are driven by intensive research, but the end result is always deeply personal and subjective. In concert, her works give generous form to fundamental questions about the ways the world is made meaningful through human activity.
