Represented Artists:Viktoria BinschtokAdrian Sauer

Adrian Sauer,

KLEMM’S Gallery was founded in 2007 by Sebastian Klemm and Silvia Bonsiepe as a gallery for conceptual contemporary art. Our roster of artists are linked by their shared interests in the transformation of experienced reality and distinctive critique of contemporary social currents. We support positions and artists who work to overcome limitations in content and form bringing new approaches to the interrogation of their medium. It is important for us to support and accompany the artists through all stages of their development and steadily build their careers in a progressive international context. In conceiving our program, it is essential for us to offer the artists a platform that allows their conceptual approaches to unfold individually and also to reflect upon and enhance each other.

Alongside our solo exhibitions of represented artists, we host carte-blanche projects by invited curators, artist-curated exhibitions and regular film screenings or artist talks. In an effort to promote and deepen the critical dialogue about the development of artistic expression, we work closely with the artists to actively document their projects and new work with unique publications and artists’ books.

KLEMM’S Gallery will present works from artists Adrian Sauer, Viktoria Binschtok at 2019 PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai.

Viktoria Binschtok was born in 1972 in Moscow. Now she lives and works in Berlin. She graduated as Meister student of Prof. Timm Rautert’s class. Viktoria has participated in diverse exhibitions held in Berlin, Chicago, Kuala Lumpur, Munich, Manchester, Barcelona, Zurich and so on.

Fascinated by the potential impact that new technological formats like Google Street View would have on a photographic understanding of the visual landscape, Binschtok began following the program in the early days of its development on the streets of New York City. She began collecting screenshots of moments when the roaming, voyeuristic GSV apparatus captured images of the general public who were caught off-guard, staring back into the camera.

Adrian Sauer uses the conception of photography as constituent. In his works he reacts to current adjustments in dealing with photography by leading common conceptions of reality and immediacy into the absurd. Photography serves him as a sketch-board for eventually finding a virtual imagery by means of adequate but digitally generated, classified and ordered colors.

“It belongs to the specific character of photographs” that they claim to provide us with an unmediated view of reality. Their materiality for the most part remains invisible behind this transparency. Like language, photographs are changing yet completely familiar instruments of our communication. We “read” photos and use them — from journalistic images to one’s own page on Facebook. Yet in the same way scholars (and literati) dismember language in order to infer how it works based on the smallest elements, the technical image time and again challenges us to sound out the quasi natural representation of the photograph for its media-related content — and this appeals not only to theorists, but to artists as well.

Adrian Sauer does not address verbal language, yet with the new digital world of images he does devote himself to another ever more important field of our communication — and he does it in a way that can be compared to the different methods of linguistics. While he did devote some of his works to the semantic and pragmatic dimension of the use of images — how are images used and read in a specific context — his main interest lies in the “morphology” of the digital image, its “theory of form”: How is it assembled within its smallest parts? How does it work to transfer visible, physical reality into a saved, calculated image? What do the Raster of the new optical instruments provide?
