Christophe Guye Galerie

Jun Ahn,1981

Christophe Guye Galerie is a contemporary art gallery, representing national and international artists who consider the medium of photography within the larger context of current art practices. First and foremost, conceptual artists who choose to express their vision through the use of a camera or light sensitive materials, the works of these emerging talents, as well as mid-career and established artists, notably contribute to the historical discourse of art, as well as to the expanding medium of photography and to the evolution of contemporary art at large.

Founded by Christophe Guye in 2006 – former SCALO|GUYE Gallery –in Los Angeles, the gallery moved to its current location in Zurich/Switzerland in 2010. With five to seven shows per year, the program varies between solo and group exhibitions that include works by gallery as well as guest artists and are occasionally organized by invited curators. In addition, the gallery embraces the long-term counselling of collections and the fostering of new collectors, as well as the curating and organizing of exhibitions in collaboration with institutions, museums, and partner galleries.

Christophe Guye Galerie will present works from artist Jun Ahn, Rinko Kawauchi, Nick Knight, Erik Madigan Heck, Jules Spinatsch, Risaku Suzuki at 2019 PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai.

Jun Ahn (South Korea, 1981) studied in the US, where she graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in art history in 2006, followed by two years of postgraduate studies of photography at the Pratt Institute. While at the Pratt, she had her first work displayed as part of group gallery exhibitions, and began to work on the Self-Portrait project, which to date is her most prominent series of photographs which she regards as “a performance without an audience”, an end of youth of sorts, and a coming to terms with the future.

In 2009 and 2010 she was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship at NewYork’s Parsons The New School for Design, and in 2011 received both the Dean's and a departmental scholarship. During this time, her work received its first major exhibitions, including a joint exhibition with Kazue Taguchi at PS 122 in New York. Furthermore, Ahn has been selected as one of BJP’s 20 Photographers To Watch in 2013. Parsons awarded her a Master of Fine Arts with honors in January 2012, following which she enrolled in a PhD program in photography at Hongik University in Seoul.

Rinko Kawauchi (Japan, 1972) burst on the international scene in 2001 when she was awarded the Kimura-Ihei-Prize, Japan’s most important emerging talent photography prize, shortly followed by the simultaneous publication of three beautiful books, Utatane (Catnap), Hanabi (Fireworks), and Hanako, her very personal study of a young girl of the same name. Met with great critical acclaim, these “visual essays” demonstrate her finesse and skill of telling a photographic tale. Since this triple-debut, the artist has gone to publish another eleven books, the newest of which are Illuminance and Ametsuchi.

Kawauchi, currently one of the most famed contemporary female Asian artists, is a recipient the eminent Annual Infinity Award (2009) from New York’s International Centre of Photography, in the category Art, and similarly was shortlisted in 2012 for the Deutsche B?rse Photography Prize. She has joined and held many group and solo shows both at home and abroad, with major solo exhibitions in the Fondation Cartier pour l'art Contemporain in Paris, London’s The Photographers' Gallery, the Hasselblad Centre in Gothenburg, Semear Museu de Arte Moderna de Sao Paulo, the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum in Shizuoka, or Brussels’ ARGOS Centre for Art & Media.

Major group exhibitions to date include those at Munich’s Hausder Kunst, the Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, Museum of Contemporary Art, in Tokyo, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Aichi, or the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: New Documents. Her unique approach is like a “drawing senses”, embracing motifs of every day details as well as cycle of life and its transience, and has been admired by art lovers all over the world.

Nick Knight (London, 1958) studied photography at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design. He graduated with a distinction in 1982. In 1985 his first book, Skinheads, won him the Designers and Art Directors Award for Best Book Cover. Yohji Yamamoto’s art director Marc Ascoli commissioned Knight for 12 successive catalogues in the late Eighties - at a time when Yamamoto campaigns were breaking new ground.

Knight made fashion history in November 1993 by adapting ring-flash photography to capture Linda Evangelista for a landmark, post-grunge cover of British Vogue. Since then, his work has graced no fewer than 36 covers. He has shot advertising campaigns for Jil Sander, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior to name a few. He has also shot record covers for David Bowie, Paul Weller, George Michael and Massive Attack.

Erik Madigan Heck (Minnesota, 1983) is one of the youngest and most promising American fashion photographers of the contemporary art scene. In his relatively short career, the artist developed a personal way of looking at fashion, as Nathalie Herschdorfer underlines in her essay "Minimal and pure: Erik Madigan Heck fashion photographs". His work is characterized by a clear and distinctive treatment of colours and patterns, which makes it unequivocal.

Jules Spinatsch (Switzerland, 1964) is one of the most successful photographers of his generation. His book Temporary Discomfort is looked upon as one of the most important photography books of the last 10 years. He studied photography at the International Center of Photography, New York. After his first steps as a photo journalist he turned to art. Long–term projects like “Temporary Discomfort”, “Snow Management” and since 2003 “Surveillance Panorama Projects” followed – using computer–operated cameras, he created novel panoramas consisting of thousands of single images. The dominating, image–creating principle here is a liaison between minute planning and directed coincidence.

Risaku Suzuki (Japan, 1963), born in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, currently lives and works in Tokyo and is known for his dedicated productions that capture scenes in Kumano, Wakayama Prefecture; one of the Japan's most holy places and also Suzuki’s hometown. One of Japan’s most prominent young photographers, Suzuki presents quintessential Japanese subjects- such as snowfall and cherry blossoms - in a manner that is at once timeless and refreshingly new.

Suzuki has held exhibitions worldwide and has received many prizes, including the Kimura Ihei Award, the most renowned award in the field of photography in Japan.
