由香港城市大学主办的展览《装饰艺术: 当法国与中国交汇》于昨日向公众开放。 杜梦堂作为一家拥有丰富装饰艺术时期藏品的法国画廊,非常荣幸能够参与这一重要艺术时期在亚洲的首个大型介绍展,为此次展览提供了来自夏尔·阿尔都司、乔治-吕西安·圭佑、保罗·兰多斯基、雅克·纳姆、卡米耶·罗什和加斯东·隋斯的12件作品,其中包括2件来自加斯东·隋斯的法国国宝级藏品。展览将持续至6月30日。
The highly-anticipated “Art Deco. The France-China Connection”, organized by City University Exhibition Gallery, opened yesterday to the public. As a French gallery with a rich collection of Art Deco, Galerie Dumonteil is honored to participate in the first major exhibition in Asia dedicated to this influential period, loaning a total of 12 works by Charles Artus, Georges-Lucien Guyot, Paul Landowski, Jacques Nam,Camille Roche, and Gaston Suisse, including 2 French national treasures. The Exhibition continues through June 30th.

雅克 · 勒芒 (1881-1974), 后名纳姆 (Nam), 他创作的线条简单的猫闻名于世, 但他的艺术才能不限于此。他也乐于表现不同的野生动物, 比如大型猫科、猴子、 爬行动物以及捕猎动物, 以此来强化其表现手法中的装饰效果。纳姆也试验过蚀刻中国漆的技法, 在装饰面板、屏风和大型室内装饰工程上表现细腻的猫科动物形象。他的作品受到两次大战间收藏家的欢迎。而他的风格亦是“ 装饰艺术 ” 的典型代表。他的作品善于表现动态特征, 线条流畅、手法精准, 不仅获得了同时代批评家的认可, 而且至今仍受到艺术爱好者的追捧。
Famous for his portraits of stylised cats, Jacques Lehman named Nam (1881-1974) was a multi-talented artist. Born into a family of musicians, he somehow developed a passion for cats at an early stage. he also took pleasure in depicting exotic animals; monkeys, reptiles, and larger predators. His subject variety strengthened the decorative aspect of his works. Nam was also experienced in the technic of Chinese lacquering, portraying felines with great finesse and aptitude on decorative panels, privacy-screens and large interior decorations. He was widely received amongst the collectors of the inter-war period. Stylistically, his works are highly representative of the Art Déco style. Nam’s work is characterized by a sublime accuracy and a mastery in depicting movement. His talent brought him renown and success in his lifetime, his great legacy and reputation remain amongst the art-lovers of today.

Gaston Suisse (1896-1988) is considered one of the most influential interior designer of the 1930s. From a family of artists, he started drawing as a child and showed at an early age a strong interest in animals and the Far East arts. He finished his course at the Arts Décoratifs in 1919 and perfected his lacquering skills starting with a vegetal based lacquer that he improves with a new synthetic varnish process allowing him to widen his chromatic range and effects such as the use of golden leaves or eggshells inlay. Alongside his preparatory drawings, his prolific work of lacquered panels picturing exotic animals and much rare of furniture with geometrical decors stands as one of the most iconic of his time and is nowadays internationally sought after.

Born in Paris, Camille Roche (1894-1948) revealed a great talent for painting and drawing. At the age of 11, he already exhibited two artworks at the Salon. Mobilized in 1914, he is seriously injured in combat then released in 1916. After the War, he began a collaboration with the Manufacture de Sèvres for a few years, in particular during the two International Exhibitions of 1925 and 1937, for which he made “The Earthly Paradise” and the "Boudoir of Serge and Camille Roche". He was also famous for his drawings of nude, of landscapes and animals. During his lifetime, several solo exhibitions were dedicated to him (Devambez Gallery in 1924, Vincent Gallery in 1930). His exceptional mastery of all traditional techniques of the painting, however the medium, allowed him unhindered freedom to make art and his powerful and personal “writing” made him one of the most outstanding personalities of his time.

Paul Landowski (1875 – 1961) was a French monument sculptor of Polish descent. His best-known work is Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and Sun Yat Sen's mausoleum statue in Nanjing. He studied at the Académie Julian, before graduating from the école Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, he won the Prix de Rome in 1900 with his statue of David, and went on to a fifty-five-year career. He won a gold medal at the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics for Sculpture, an event held from 1912 to 1952. From 1933 through 1937 he was Director of the French Academy in Rome. He also served as an art–juror with Florence Meyer Blumenthal in awarding the Prix Blumenthal, a grant given between 1919–1954 to young French painters, sculptors, decorators, engravers, writers and musicians.

Born in Paris, Georges-Lucien Guyot (1885-1973), whose Work is as strong and charming as his personality, is one of the greatest Animalier Artists of the 20th century. From his very first pieces, Guyot has encountered significant recognition. Nowadays his reputation is international. Guyot’s success and renown were substantial throughout the 1930s, however, his reputation was consecrated in 1972 when he won the ‘Edouard-Marcel Sandoz’ Prize. He is certainly the most accomplished animal artist as he knew how to express himself with equal talent through both sculpture and drawing. Monkeys, bears, big cats and horses have been the subjects of his bestiary’s portfolio, his strong sense of character portrayal and his unending artistic concern to express their inner-feelings has made Guyot a legend amongst animaliers.

Charles Artus (1897-1978) was born in the Normandy region, he arrived in Paris to become a student of Navellier. Artus enjoyed frequenting the ‘Jardin des Plantes’ in Paris, it was there where he would meet Fran?ois Pompon. Henceforth, they collaborated intimately throughout many years, leading Artus to be one of the founding members of the famous "Groupe des Douze". Artus is thus considered as an Inter-War period Animal sculptor whose stylistics is similar to that of Pompon, yet his sufficient originality makes him a pioneer. Major French and Foreign museums now own Charles Artus’ artworks. One may see his art pieces among the collections of the National Modern Art Museum of Paris, Museums of Rouen, Vernon, Gien, Boulogne, Poitiers, Mont de Marsan, the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Museums of Philadelphia, Tokyo, Toronto, Ottawa, Luxembourg among many others... Since he passed away, his reputation has kept increasing and he now belongs amongst the greatest sculptors of his time. His legacy remains alongside with Bugatti, Pompon, Guyot, and Sandoz.

ABOUT CITY U EXHIBITION GALLERY

城大展览馆自2016年成立以来,致力成为立足香港、弘扬西方与亚洲文化交流的展览场地,曾举办多个揉合艺术、科学与科技的展览。展出项目包括意大利画家郎世宁的跨文化画作及其在中国宫廷的工作、展示巴黎天际的轮廓在艺术上的影响的跨媒体装置、客家功夫的文化传承及展望的3D立体视觉展览、清华大学著名学者从未发表的手札、香港电影及岭南洪拳功夫的关系、中国年轻艺术家的媒体作品、丰富的跨媒体展览「藏珍阁」(现代博物馆与自然科学的起源),以及与台北的国立故宫博物院合办的「动物大观园」等。
Established in 2016, the CityU Exhibition Gallery has mounted various exhibitions that focus on the intersection of the arts, sciences, and technology. These include the cross-cultural works of the Italian painter Giuseppe Castiglione, working at the Imperial Chinese court; a cross-media representation of the influence of the Parisian skyline on the arts; the cultural legacy and future of Hakka Kung Fu through 3D visualisation; unpublished letters by important Tsinghua scholars; the relation of Hong Kong film and martial arts in Lingnan Hung Kuen Kung Fu; works of young Chinese media artists; a rich cross-media representation of the development of Cabinet of Curiosities (the origins of today’s museums as well as of the natural sciences); and ANiMAL exhibition collaborated with the National Palace Museum in Taipei, etc.
