Collections of contemporary and modern jewellery are now found in nearly 60 national-level cultural and art institutions across the world, including a number of globally renowned galleries and museums. Most of these pieces of jewellery were created since the early or middle 20th century, when, in the context of an unprecedentedly diverse outburst of concepts and approaches to art making under the influence of postmodernism and related theories, jewellery began to be used by many artists and designers as a form of expression and a language of creation, and gradually became a profession of art.Today, modern and contemporary jewellery has become sought after by art connoisseurs, and one of the topics for museum research on the history of modern art and practices. Through thousands of years of evolution, jewellery has incorporated diverse meanings. Its breakthroughs in different times were fueled by transformative designers, developments in crafts and techniques, changes in materials, or the emergence of new concepts or ideologies.
