About the Exhibition
This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of Korean artist Kim Byoungho in Arario Gallery Shanghai. Kim Byoungho focused on the mutual reaction between the environmental noise and the reality brought about by the audience intervention, creating many works of wire sound installation in the beginning of 2000s. Entering the late 2000s, the artist is keen on inputting the sound of circuit inside the sculpture, and turn on the experiment of audio playing through mechanical functions, thus starting an all-round exploration of the type of “mechanical product” among all processes in sculpture media.
The sculptures of Kim Byoungho are not welded together, but assembled by different parts according to the design drawings. The artist strictly follows what he describes as “the relevance of systematic and extremely exquisite planning”, and constructs with geometric modules in a peaceful order and a monumental majesty that attracts the attention of the passers-by. The metal sculptures processed by precise instruments twinkle in the sight of audience, bringing a feeling of enchantment. In today’s art world, which emphasizes pluralism and sensory integration, this creative technique of setting ocularcentrism as the core of his artworks is courageous and innovative.

The installation works of Kim Byoungho aim to make the audience have a skeptical attitude towards the existence and environment of geometric modules, the nearly abstinent systematic order, and the luster of skilled metallic smelting. The artist believes that after experiencing the obvious magnificence and glitter of his works, the viewer is more likely to feel interested in the inherent philosophical verification contained therein, because they are just like the result of enlarging the environment that people in today’s society face, which is full of various visual temptations, to the extreme. Therefore, Kim Byoungho formulated the title “Enchantment” for this solo exhibition in Arario Gallery Shanghai, the etymology of which comes from the ancient mantra “chanting as if spellbound”. Through the three large-scale installation works on display, the artist hopes to discuss a fable of trust in vision and the hidden doubts behind.
Although the artist’s works attract people to stop by, when the exhibition concludes, all works are to be disassembled into small parts according to the reverse order of installing, and the spectacular impression of the works only remained in the memory of the audience. This is not some gloomy and heavy nothingness, but we, according to German sociologist Max Weber, who have become lonely, isolated and fragmented in the era of disenchantment, bring back the magnificent mechanics and proud sirens, enchanting our sight and footsteps forward.

Art Kim Byoungho has previously held two solo exhibitions in Arario Gallery Spaces in Korea – A System, Arario Gallery Samcheong (Seoul) in 2011 and Garden in the Garden, Arario Gallery (Cheonan) in 2013. This exhibition is Kim Byoungho’s first solo exhibition in China, and it is also the process of the artist’s observation of the scenic content of modern people and group concepts from a unique personal perspective. We hope that this exhibition will be an opportunity to explore from a philosophical perspective into the profound introspection of the trust of enchantment and the illusion it creates.
Kim Byoungho’s works have been permanently collected by international institutions including Art Bank of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, New World Group Hong Kong, Kulturamt der Stadt Frankfurt am Main, Germany, SK View Park Project of Seoul, ILSHIN Foundation, Seoul, NIKKEN SEKKEI Construction Corp., Jeju Museum of Art, Museum of Art Seoul National University, Seoul, Hyundai Motor Company, Seoul, Amore Pacific Museum of Art, Yongin, Arario Collection, Cheonan.
About the Artist

Kim Byoungho inserts circuitry into metallic sculptures, presenting unique oeuvre of sound sculptures that create electronic sound. His works are described by tubes that stretch out from a certain focal point, with a steady electronic sound. The forms in which long narrow tubes stretch out in one or in many directions from a bulky center point juxtaposes with the swift sense of movement and the metallic coldness of his works. The metallic works are processed precisely according to the regulations of the parts and blue print the artist has designed, following the production method of mass production system, and reflecting the social structure of conventions, customs and standards. Here, the artist inputs calm electronic sound, and the sound flows in a slow simple manner that doesn't interfere with the sculptural element of the work freely traverses between material and non-material, and visual and aural, allowing the viewer to experience a force that overpowers the space.
Kim Byoungho’s works have been exhibited in numerous important international art institutions. Recent solo exhibitions include Mediated Memory, Pagoda sculpture #01, Songgwangsa, Suncheon, 2016-2017; Garden in the Garden, Arario Gallery Cheonan, Korea, 2013; A System, Arario Gallery Seoul, 2011. Kim Byoungho also participated in several group exhibitions including Rediscovery of Colors, Museum SAN, Korea, 2017; DNA, Daegu Art Museum, Daegu, Korea, 2016; Pr?ve Rommet, Landmark, Bergen, Norway, 2015; Tools for a Break: Korean Craft & Design, Galerie Rieder, München, Germany, 2015; By Destiny, Arario Museum, Jeju, Korea.
