ABOUT SOCIALIST MODERNISM PROGRAM

由泰康空间出品、著名艺术家与策展人郑胜天先生主持策划的大型中国艺术文献研究项目“社会主义现代主义”（Socialist Modernism），于2017年8月正式启动，第一个阶段的研究计划为期两年，至2019年8月结束。该项目是对近现代中国美术史特定主题的一次重新梳理，并试图描述在主流的社会主义现实主义叙述之外溢出，却又无法被归类和忽视的艺术史实践。前期研究溯源至1930年代的现代艺术活动，以出现于1950年代末期至1960年代初期中国的“社会主义现代主义”美术为主轴，而后期则延展至1980年代中国的“新潮美术”回响。在考察现代艺术在中国近代以来活动的主要历史脉络以及主要案例的同时，兼顾整理中国与国际左翼现代艺术活动的密切交往史，由此构成并推动全球视阈下关于中国现代艺术较为全面、立体的历史研究与呈现。

“Socialist Modernism” is a major research program of the archive and literature of Chinese art, directed by the artist and curator ZHENG Shengtian and supported by Taikang Space. This program officially started in the August of 2017. The first phase of the research will last two years until the August of 2019. The program is a retrospection of the specific topics of the history of Chinese modern art, attempting to describe those practices in art history which have gone beyond the narrative of the mainstream socialist modernism yet could neither be categorized nor neglected. The preliminary research aims to trace the modern art activities back until the 1930s, taking the “Socialist Modernism Art” emerged in China from the late 1950s to early 1960s as a clue. On later stage, it will expand to explore the “New Wave Art” in China during the 1980s. While focusing on the main historical contexts and cases of modern art activities in China, this research also examines the communications and exchanges among the modern art activities between China and the international left-wings, through which a rather rich and thorough historical study and presentation of Chinese modern art will be constructed and promoted under a global vision.

第一期工作坊：重探中国现代主义

The First Academic Workshop: A Revisit to Chinese Modernism

围绕项目第一阶段的研究，泰康空间将组织系列学术工作坊、国际会议和出版项目。本次学术工作坊“重探中国现代主义”为项目的首个公开活动，我们特邀请项目主编郑胜天、两位知名青年学者、本项目的特约研究员胡斌与唐晓琳，和项目总监董冰峰一起，他们将从各自不同的研究视角与具体的文献分析，来探讨中国现代主义与“社会主义现代主义”互为表里、纷繁复杂的历史脉络并呈现其发展的内在性。

Around the first phase of the program, Taikang Space will organize a series of academic workshops, international conferences and publication projects. This academic workshop “A Revisit to Chinese Modernism” is the first public event of the program. We invited ZHENG Shengtian, the chief editor of the program, two well-known young scholars, the special research fellows HU Bin and TANG Xiaolin, together with the program director DONG Bingfeng, to share their specific research perspectives and analyses of the relevant archive and literature. Together they will explore the complex relationships between Chinese modernism and “socialist modernism” – they not only correspond to each other, but also indicate a complicated inherence of the historical context and the development of art.

郑胜天将介绍“社会主义现代主义”概念的定义及问题框架；胡斌通过比较左翼艺术家黄新波在1949新中国建立前后的艺术变化，引申中国现代主义个体实践的精神内涵；唐晓琳以1956年墨西哥画家西盖罗斯访华的事件发端，阐述国际关系变化与“社会主义现代主义”在中国发生的历史必然；董冰峰以1930、1950和1980年代三组不同时期的现代主义在中国的发生为例，讨论中国现代主义的政治与美学表现中整体变革动力和偶然因素。

ZHENG Shengtian will introduce the definition and the framework of “socialist modernism”. HU Bin will extend the spiritual connotation of the individual practice of Chinese modernism by comparing the changes of Huang Xinbo’s art before and after 1949. Starting from the visit of the Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros to China in 1956, TANG Xiaolin will explain from a historical view about the necessity of the happening of “socialist modernism” in China as a result of the shifts in international relations. DONG Bingfeng will take three examples from the 1930s, 1950s and 1980s to introduce the three critical stages in the history of modernism  art in China, discussing both the overall dynamics and accidental factors of the political and aesthetic appearance in Chinese modernism.

As one of the long-established non-profit art institutions in China, Taikang Space has always attached great importance to the combination of history and site, research and practice. Bearing the idea of “retrospection and encouragement”, Taikang Space endeavours to discover the inherent logic of local art sites and their own cultural and historical development. We are dedicated to open up more discoursive space for interpreting and narrating the history of modern and contemporary art of China with plural perspectives. In response to such aims, a series of exhibitions and projects such as “Rural North China 1947-1948” and “Norman Bethune: Coevolution of Hero and Photography” have been conducted and presented. “社会主义现代主义”项目正是这个方向上的再一次努力和推进。项目在全球视野中重新梳理与呈现中国现代艺术在特定历史进程中多层次、跨区域的复杂面貌，通过多样历史图景的重建与还原，为我们理解当下提供了更充分和坚实的基础。泰康空间将以此项目为契机，推进中国现当代艺术历史的研究和叙事走向一个更具高度与多样的未来。

“Socialist Modernism” is a further effort to promote to this direction. It aims at tracing and showing the multi-level and inter-regional complexities of Chinese modern art during a particular historical process from a global perspective, providing us with a firm basis to understand our contemporary era by rebuilding and restoring diverse historical images and visions. With this program as a turning point, Taikang Space will promote the research and narratives of the contemporary art history of China to a higher and more diversified future.

Introductions of the Speakers and Research Fellows

郑胜天  ZHENG Shengtian

当代著名艺术家、策展人，“社会主义现代主义”项目策划、主编。现居温哥华。曾任浙江美术学院（现中国美院）油画系主任、美国明尼苏达大学和圣地牙哥州立大学客座教授、梁洁华艺术基金会秘书长及温哥华当代亚洲艺术中心创会理事。2002年起担任英文当代中国艺术学刊《Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art（典藏国际版）》总策划至今，现兼任温哥华美术馆亚洲馆总监、加中当代艺术协会主席和纽约亚洲艺术文献库理事。历年来策划过许多艺术活动与展览。其论著也频繁在中外刊物上发表。中国美术学院出版社于2013年出版了四册《郑胜天艺文选》。2011年因担任温哥华双年展亚洲资深策展人被颁发策展终身成就奖。2013年加拿大艾米莉?卡美术与设计大学授予他荣誉博士称号。

ZHENG Shengtian is the curator and chief editor of the “Socialist Modernism” research program. An artist, scholar and curator, ZHENG has lived and worked in Vancouver, Canada since 1990. Before relocating to Canada, he worked at his alma mater China Academy of Art as Professor and Chair of the Oil Painting Department. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota and at San Diego State University in the 1980s. He was the Secretary of the Annie Wong Art Foundation and the Founding Board Director of Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Vancouver. Since 2002, he has been the Chief Editor of Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art (Global Version). Currently he is the Adjunct Director of the Institute of Asian Art at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Chairman of Yishu Initiative of Contemporary Chinese Art Society and Trustee of the Asia Art Archive in America. As an independent curator, he has organized and curated numerous exhibitions and art events. He is a frequent contributor to periodicals and catalogues. In 2013, four volumes of ZHENG Shengtian, Selected Writing on Art were published by China Academy of Art Press. In 2011, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his curatorial work by the committee of Vancouver Biennale. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2013.

唐昕  TANG Xin

泰康保险集团艺术品收藏部负责人，泰康空间总监。她曾策划的主要展览包括：中国首次女性艺术国际交流展“1999科隆－北京，北京－科隆：中德女性艺术家交流展”；2009至2011年“51㎡”系列展；2011年中国美术馆的“图像－历史－存在：泰康人寿成立15周年收藏展”；2014年“向左拉动：不保持一贯正确”美国巡展，以及2015年武汉大学万林艺术博物馆开馆展“聚变：一九三零年代以来的中国现当代艺术”等。著有《花家地：1979-2004中国当代艺术发展亲历者谈话录》《中国非营利艺术机构访谈集》等。

TANG Xin is the head of Art Collection of Taikang Insurance Group and also the director of Taikang Space. The exhibitions curated by TANG Xin mainly include: China’s first female art international exchange exhibition “1999 Cologne - Beijing, Beijing - Cologne: The Exchange Exhibition of Chinese and German female artists”; series exhibition “51㎡” (2009-2011); “Image ? History ? Existence – Taikang Life 15th Anniversary Art Collection Exhibition” (2011, National Art Museum of China); “Pull Left: Not Always Right” (2014, travelling exhibition to US); “Fusion: Chinese Modern and Contemporary Art since the 1930s” (2015, Wanlin Art Museum of Wuhan University). Publications include Hua Jia Di (1979-2004) and Interviews with Contemporary Artists, etc.

董冰峰  DONG Bingfeng

独立策展人，现为中国美院跨媒体艺术学院客座研究员，“社会主义现代主义”项目总监。2005年至今曾先后为广东美术馆和尤伦斯当代艺术中心策展人、伊比利亚当代艺术中心副馆长、栗宪庭电影基金艺术总监和OCAT研究中心学术总监。从2013年起，董冰峰先后获得“CCAA中国当代艺术评论家奖”、“《Yishu》典藏国际版中国当代艺术评论奖“和”何鸿毅家族中国研究驻留奖”。

DONG Bingfeng is the general director of the “Socialist Modernism” research program. He is a curator and producer based in Beijing. He is a research fellow in School of Inter-media Art, China Academy of Art. Since 2005, DONG Bingfeng has worked as the curator in Guangdong Museum of Art and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), Deputy Director of Iberia Center for Contemporary Art, Art Director of Li Xianting’s Film Fund, and Academic Director of OCAT Institute.  In 2013, DONG Bingfeng was awarded the “CCAA Chinese Contemporary Art Critic Award”. In 2015, he was awarded the “Chinese Contemporary Art Critic Award of Yishu:Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art”. In 2017, he was awarded the “Robert H.N.Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant”.

胡斌  HU Bin

广州美术学院美术馆副馆长、艺术管理学系教授，“社会主义现代主义”项目特邀研究员。他专注的研究方向有中国革命美术史、中国现当代艺术展览史等。胡斌长期从事当代艺术的批评与策展。著有《视觉的改造：20世纪中国美术的切面解读》《何以代表“中国”：中国在世博会上的展示与国家形象的呈现》等。

HU Bin is the deputy director of the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and a professor of Department of Art Management. He is a special research fellow of the “Socialist Modernism” research program. His research interests include the history of Chinese revolutionary art and the history of Chinese modern and contemporary art exhibitions. He has also been engaged in the criticism and curatorial work of contemporary art. He is the author of Visual Reformation: the Sectional Interpretation of Chinese Fine Arts in 20th Century, What Best Represents China? The Display of China and Its National Image in World Expositions, etc.

唐晓琳  TANG Xiaolin

中国美术学院跨媒体艺术学院当代艺术与策展研究专业博士，现任中国美术学院学报《新美术》（新媒体）编辑，《人间思想》（简体版）编辑，“社会主义现代主义”项目特邀研究员。她的研究领域包括当代艺术研究、中国现代艺术史研究、策展研究与实践。曾参与“八五?85”、“胜天作业”、“与后殖民说再见——第三届广州三年展”等计划的研究策划工作。

TANG Xiaolin graduated from School of Inter-Media Art, China Academy of Art with a doctor’s degree of Art Studies. She is a special research fellow of the “Socialist Modernism” research program. She is currently the executive editor of New Arts and Renjian Thoughts, journals of the China Academy of Art. Her main research interests include contemporary art studies, Chinese modern art history, curatorial studies and practice. She has participated in the curatorial and research work in different projects such as “Shengtian Project” (since 2015), “1985 and 85 New Wave: Alternative Thinking of Chinese Avant-Garde” (2013), “Farewell to the Post-Colonialism: The 3rd Guangzhou Triennial” (2008), etc.

滕宇宁   TENG Yuning

北京大学视觉与图像研究中心副主任，吴作人国际美术基金会副秘书长，德国汉堡大学艺术史博士候选人，“社会主义现代主义”项目特邀研究员。2005年起参与《中国当代艺术年鉴》编纂工作，2008年至今担任《年鉴》编务总监，“中国当代艺术年鉴展” 2014、2015、2016执行策展人；2016年第34届世界艺术史大会“风景与奇观”组青年主席。

TENG Yuning is a special research fellow of the “Socialist Modernism” research program. She is the deputy director at Center for Visual Studies of Peking University, vice secretary-general at Wu Zuoren International Foundation of Fine Arts. She is also PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Hamburg, Germany. Since 2005, she joined the editing works of Annual of Contemporary Art of China, and took the position of Director of Editing Affairs since 2008. She was the executive curator of “Exhibition of Annual of Contemporary Art of China” in 2014, 2015 and 2016. She also took the role as the Junior Chair of the “Landscape and Spectacle” session of CIHA (the Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art) 2016.
