Liu Wei employs the process of localization in Sifang Art Museum’s mountain area, possessing both the environmental art and the characteristics of land art for his interventionist installation “Dark Matter.” The artist uses this exploratory art technique to examine the possibilities of an interventionist reality. In 2008, Liu Wei presented his installation “Dark Matter” for the first timeat Hangzhou’s China Academy of Arts (CAA). The most important component of the work is iron sheets, which used at the same time as the simulation of the extreme characteristics of commercial advertising schemes help to direct the viewer’s attention to the unreal and unexpected, special and complex relationship between the outsider and the social and natural realities. Liu Wei (b.1972) was born and presently resides in Beijing, China.?He was trained as a painter at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou in 1996.?He is heavily influenced by the instability and fluctuation peculiar to twenty-first century China, in particular with respect to its physical and intellectual landscape. Initially Liu belongs to the generation of artists known as the Post-Sensibility group; in the years since, with his paintings, videos and large-scale installations Liu has become a singular presence on the global art stage. Post-Duchampian, and actively negotiating with the legacy of the Modern, his works are known for crystallizing the visual and intellectual chaos of China’s myriad fraught transformations into an artistic language as versatile as it is distinctive. The long-term “Love It, Bite It” series of oxhide installations, “Jungle”canvas installations, “Density”book installations and the recent, monumental series of paintings “The East” and “Panorama” for instance, represent the immense diversity found in Liu Wei’s art: ruined, dystopian structures made of uncanny materials that pertain chiefly to the urban environment today, and painted surfaces of formidable tranquility that communicate actively with the history of abstract art.
Liu Wei’s recent solo exhibitions include “Panorama”(PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, 2016);“Silver”(White Cube, Hong Kong, 2015); “Colors” (Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, 2015); “Sensory Space 4” (Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 2014); “Density” (White Cube, London, 2014); “Liu Wei” (Lehmann Maupin gallery, New York, 2013); “Liu Wei” (Long March Space, Beijing, 2012); “Trilogy” (Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, 2011). His first solo exhibition was held in Courtyard Gallery in Beijing.Recent group exhibitions include “What About the Art? Contemporary Art from China”(Al Riwaq, Doha, 2016);“Bentu, Chinese artists at a time of turbulence and transformation”(Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, 2016); “Adventures of the Black Square - Abstract Art and Society 1915-2015” (Whitechapel Gallery, London, 2015); “28 Chinese” (Rubell Family Collection, Miami, 2013); “Shanshui” (Lucerne Museum of Art, Lucerne, 2011); “DREAMLANDS” (Centre National d’art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, Paris, 2010); “Breaking Forecast: 8 Key Figures of China’s New Generation Artists” (Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, 2009); “China Power Station: Part III” (Mudam Luxembourg, Luxembourg, 2008); “China Power Station: Part II” (Astrup Fearnley Museet for Moderne Kunst, Oslo, 2007); “Art for Sale” (Shanghai Plaza, Shanghai, 1999); “Post-sensibility – Alien Bodies and Delusion” (Shaoyaoju, Beijing, 1999) , among others.Liu Wei has participated in the 9th and 13th Biennale de Lyon (2007, 2015); the 11th Sharjah Biennial (2013); the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Guangzhou Triennial (2002, 2005, 2008, 2012); the 6th Busan Biennale (2008); the 51st Venice Biennale (2005); the Unlimited project, Art Basel (2013, 2015). He received the Chinese Contemporary Art Award for Best Artist 2008; he was the Martell Artist of the Year in 2012; he was nominated for the Award of Art China 2015 and 2016, and was nominated for the Credit Suisse Today Art Award 2011.Panorama, PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, South KoreaSilver, White Cube, Hong Kong, ChinaColors, Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing, ChinaLong March Space, Basel, SwitzerlandSensory Spaces 4,Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, ? ? ? ? ? ?
