In the third darkened room stands a 12-foot rock and concrete sculpture with visual parallels to a brutalist monument, titled Crossing the Border. Crossing the Border features the outline of Gandhi, the iconic figure who championed peaceful civil disobedience as a potent political tool. The historic leader, carved out of concrete and rock, rises out of the outdoor space and transforms from a static object into a visual waterfall. The sound of the water starts as a trickle, then becomes faster and louder while Gandhi’s walking stick pulses with electric light. Crossing the Border is interested in how society is in a state of rapid flux and how we live in an ethical twilight in our increasingly hyper-connected world.
