Wu Mingzhong, By Oneself, 2016, 180 x 300cm, Acrylic Rock Color on Canvas ? 2019 Wu Mingzhong

It is an honor to announce that the artist Mr. Wu Mingzhong will launch his first solo exhibition in Parkview Green 798 Gallery on June 16th, 2019 (Saturday), with the theme “Wu Mingzhong: In-Outward Observations”, where the artist’s two series of paintings created in recent years will be exhibited. With the theme of In-Outward Observation, the exhibition will last till July 21th, Sunday.

As one of the most famous artists of Globalocalism is China’scontemporary art in the early years of 21th century, Wu Mingzhong is known to many by his unique painting The Glass Figures. Since the beginning of the 21th century with intensifying globalization, the zealous consumerism has been gaining popularity in China, and Wu Mingzhong has keenly captured the zeitgeist and the problems concealed beneath – material pursuit and fragility. He started questioning, from a new perspective of an artist, the relationship between human beings and society, humanity and lust, as well as between fragility and perpetuality. The warm and intimate human body made of flesh and bones is replaced by the hard yet fragile glass and becomes cold and estranged. The scarlet pigments in the canvas do not only constitute a visual impact, but also bring illusional impulsive dizziness to the audience. This is somehow like the currently society, where people are obsessed with money and are unable to see themselves. Surrounded by such external environment, Wu Mingzhong is a questioner of the era and society, who quietly sits behind the paintings depicting and questioning everything that falls into his sight.

In recently years, the creation theme of Wu Mingzhong is gradually steered from description of external world to the attending to his inner space. Inspired by traditional Chinese culture and paintings, such as Liuzu Chopping Bamboos by Liang Kai, Meditation of Two Buddhists by Shi Ke, and the works of Mu Xi such as Six Persimmons, Two Watermelonsand Two Monkeys, he is focused on the personal status and spiritual observations at a certain stage of his life. In the newly created series of inward observations, once scarlet elements are extracted what’s left are only the crystal clear glass figures, which stand at the specific spots in the space and time, so alone as private individuals, against the life full of urgency, which are connected with and turned against each other with the interwoven relationship of sight, emotions and consciousness. The artist expressed his inner reflections to life in the exhibition where the life of individuals and vicissitudes of world would meet with time, space and emotions.

The exhibition “Wu Mingzhong: In-Outward Observations” follows the concept of “observation” and demonstrates the two sides of the artist’s works: the outward world and inward status. The exhibition wishes to focus on the artist himself to find out the trajectory of how his creation transforms so that we can better understand the value of his works. Through exhibiting the complexity and depth of his works, the original thoughts and creation philosophies can be presented to the audience.
