展期 Duration

地点 Location

Parkes Place, Parkes, Canberra, Australia

Melati Suryodarmo is part of the group exhibition “Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia” at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA). The exhibition opens on 21 June with her durational performance "Transaction of Hollows", shown for the first time in Australia. For over four hours, Suryodarmo repeatedly fired bamboo arrows within a white room, questioning contemporary society’s insatiable drive to achieve and acquire. A second session will be held two days later, on 23 June. This performance, together with the performance objects and video documentation, has been acquired by the NGA as part of their Gallery collection.

"Transaction of Hollows" is a durational performance where the visceral and aural takes centre stage. Wielding a Javanese bow, Suryodarmo shoots hundreds of arrows in a custom-built room that the audience also inhabits. The arrows whizz through the air and pierce the walls, producing a loud hollow sound on impact. Through this performance, she meditates on the direction of our lost society. In October 2016, this works was first performed and produced by Lilith Performance Studio in Malmo, Sweden.

To aim at something can be both literal and metaphorical. An archer aims at the bull’s eye and people aim to attain certain goals or achievements. The path of the arrow also matters. The world is full of distractions and impurity that sway the direction of the arrow. Javanese archery teaches that the process is as, or more, important than the target. In society’s search for bigger, better and more, as it aims for a certain utopia that cannot realistically be achieved. Suryodarmo proposes a more direct relationship with the world around us. Dealing with the process, perhaps of life itself, is more important as the utopia can only be hollow.

Another work, the video documentation of Suryodarmo’s performance "Exergie - Butter Dance" is acquired by TATE Modern as part of their collection consisting of international modern and contemporary artworks from all over the world.
