Brian Wallace, founder of Red Gate Gallery, is pleased to announce that Jamaican born Peter Wayne Lewis has joined Red Gate as a represented artist, marking a new direction of Red Gate to introduce foreign artists to the Beijing art world.

"Lewis and Red Gate have had a long association since his participation in our residency program in 2007" Wallace said, after which Peter went on to build his Oasis Studio in one of the arts districts near 798.

Peter Wayne Lewis: The BendingTime Paintings - From Kingston to Beijing will be exhibited from July 6 - 21 this year.

The suite of paintings to be exhibited reflect on Lewis's journey from his birthplace in Jamaica, his studies in California and his current work as an educator in Boston. They are infused with jazz, influenced by the artist’s African – American heritage and infected by the cacophony that is Beijing. Rich in color, these abstract constructions promise to gently calm the viewer’s anxieties by immersing them in a playground of visual pleasure.

For nearly 15 years, this decades-long “questioning of everything” has been enriched by his constant travel to work in his large Beijing studio where a prodigious body of work has been prepared for such prestigious exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art - North Miami (MOCA, 2015); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA, Beijing, 2016); and China Art Museum, Shanghai (2016).

Lewis’s work is currently exhibited in the Le Musee Des Civilizations Noire, (MCN) INAUGURAL EXHIBITION, Dakar, Senegal, and in October 2019 he will exhibit Beijing Booster Paintings at The Delaware Contemporary, Wilmington, DE, USA

PETER WAYNE LEWIS was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies and immigrated to the United States in 1962 where his parents made their home in Sacramento, California. He received his Master of Arts in painting in 1979 from San Jose State University in California and became an American citizen in 1983. He is a Tenured Professor of Painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts and the former Chairman of Fine Art 2D Department. Lewis is currently Director of the Advisory Board of WhiteBox, NY.

He has exhibited extensively in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, USA and Asia.

Red Gate was founded in 1991 in Beijing’s iconic Dongbianmen tower on the old city Ming wall. The gallery has represented many Chinese artists from a young age and many have become the most prominent artists in China’s contemporary art scene, some playing an important part in the training and nurturing of the next generations through education roles at the leading art schools. In 2001 Red Gate created the international residency program which has hosted over 1,000 artists from China and around the world.
