A+ Contemporary is pleased to participate in the second edition of Condo Shanghai on July 13, 2019, teamed up with 1301PE from Los Angeles and Springsteen from Baltimore to present a group exhibition "Space/Reflection". The artists - Ann Veronica Janssens, Diana Thater, Pae White, SUPERFLEX from 1301PE, Alex Ito, Benjamin Horns, Sydney Shen from Springsteen, and two Chinese artists Chen Wei and Xia Tao presented by A+ Contemporary – share the gallery space and present a series of works in the medium of painting, installation, video and mural, etc. Through this collaborative platform, the show displays a part of various perspectives of contemporary life. The exhibition will be on view until August 30, 2019.


About Condo 

Established by gallerist Vanessa Carlos in London, 2016 and subsequently introduced to New York by Simone Subal and Nicole Russo in 2017, Condo was brought to S?o Paulo, Mexico City and Shanghai by Jaqueline Martins, Pamela Echeverría and Lorraine Malingue respectively in 2018. Condo takes its name from 'condominium' and represents a new format for international galleries to collaborate in exhibition-making. The 2019 edition will feature a total of 21 galleries and spaces working together for a collaborative exhibition across 7 local Shanghai art spaces. The 7 Shanghai art spaces will host 14 international galleries from cities including London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Mexico City and Guatemala City, displaying major works by their represented artists alongside those of the host spaces. 


About Artists

Chen Wei was born in 1990 in Jiangxi, China. He graduated from Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute with a BA in Ceramic Art in 2011, and from Fine Arts College of Shanghai University with a MA in 2014. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. Chen Wei is interested in the common destiny of humans and the mystery lies in daily life. He cultivated a sense in material from his background in ceramic art. Chen forms his unique language through a high abstraction toward ceramics, architecture, as well as physical performance. His group exhibitions include: Space/Reflection -Condo Shanghai (co-organized by A+ Contemporary, 1301PE and Springsteen, A+ Contemporary, Shanghai, 2019) (Upcoming), Exchange Value, (BANK/Mabsociety, Shanghai, 2019), SAYA Embrace Project Exhibition (Museum of Contemporary Art Chengdu, Chengdu, 2017), The Shanghai Award Exhibition (Italy Garuzzo Visual Art Center, Milan, 2014), M50 Creative New Artist Award Exhibition (M Art Center, Shanghai, 2013). Recent artist-in-residence programs include: GlogauAIR Artist Residency (Berlin, 2017); Swatch Art Peace Hotel Artist Residency (Shanghai, 2016); Red Gate Residency (Beijing,2015); The Shanghai Award Artist Residency (Milan, 2014); Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts Artist Residency (Newcastle, 2013); Visva-Bharati University Artist Residency (Calcutta, 2013). Recent awards include: SAYA Embrace Projcet Annual Award (2017); The Shanghai Award - Italian and Chinese Emerging Artist (2014); M50 Creative New Artist Award - the ShanghART Gallery Award (2013).

 

Benjamin Horns was born in 1989 in the United States. He graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in 2011 and from St?delschule (Frankfurt, Germany) in 2016. He currently lives and works in New York. His solo exhibitions include: Some New Social Portraits (Springsteen Gallery, Baltimore, 2017 ) , Liste (Federico Vavassori, Basel, 2015 ), Two Person Show with Eric Mack (Elaine Levy Project, Brussels, 2014 ). Alex Ito was born in 1991 in Los Angeles. He graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Sculpture, Double Minor in Cultural Studies and Art History in 2013. He currently works and lives in Queens, New York. He is the director of Chen's, a townhouse gallery based in New York. SUPERFLEX is a Danish artists' group founded and directed by Jakob Fenger, Rasmus Nielsen and Bj?rnstjerne Christiansen since 1993. SUPERFLEX projects examine the dynamics and dependencies created by economic systems and develop tools to be used in constructive transformations. Sydney Shen was born in 1989. She graduated from the Cooper Union, New York with a BFA in 2010 and from Universit?t der Künste, Berlin in 2011. Sydney Shen currently lives and works in New York. Diana Thater  was born in 1962 in San Francisco. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Diana Thater has created pioneering film, video, and installation-based works since the early 1990s. She makes video installations that poetically grapple with threats to the natural world, from the extinction of species to long-lasting environmental disasters. Pae White  was born in 1963 in Pasadena, California. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles. White's practice is known for blurring the traditional and often nebulous boundaries between the fine and applied arts, architecture and design. White's works subverts viewers' expected relationship to familiar objects, processes and spaces. He graduated from Shanghai Normal University with a BA in Art Education in 2003 and from Kunsthochschule Kassel, Germany with MFA in Fine Art in 2010, entitled with "Meisterschülerof Prof. Norbert Radermacher. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. Xia Tao concentrates transformation of meaning on building, material and form within time and space. He tries to feel the spectrum of where the body resides and to create a new context using ready-mades and waste materials. His recent works show the interest of variations of urban daily kernels "housing" and "driving" under a certain pressure from outside.
