BROWNIE Project will present works from artist Guo Yingguang, Julie Favreau, Patricia Waller, Fan Haoran at 2019 PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai.

Guo Yingguang's work revolves around social issues in contemporary China, using image creation to deconstruct /construct relationships and express emotions linked to her past. Her multi-media combination of photography, printmaking, video, performance and artist book aims for melancholia, delicacy, and abstraction related to women on the shelf, arranged marriages, and pseudo-intimacy between the husbands and wives who are the victims of such marriages.
The Bliss of Conformity to be shown at this year's PHOTOFAIRS is a project based on Guo’s performance and documentary photography at the matchmaking corner of People’s Park, Shanghai. Exploring the marriage, living and self-value reality faced by educated women in today’s Chinese society, the series won Guo the Jimei ARLES 2017 Madame Figaro Women Photographer Award and was officially invited to exhibit at Rencontres d'Arles International Photography Festival in France in 2018. During the exhibition, her works were highly recommended by the well-known artists Sophie Calle and Paul Graham. Guo’s most recent solo exhibition Yingguang Guo: The Bliss of Conformity opened at Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris, France) this April (2019), marking her the first Chinese female artist to hold a solo exhibition at the MEP.

Julie Favreau’s works are open stories meant to induce a state of heightened sensory awareness in the viewer —statements for a return to concentration, focus, intuition and tactility. In her videos, choreographies, sculptures and photography, eroticism and female gaze are approached as a form of power. She is interested in exploring the erotic texture of the world, the way animate and inanimate things touch and affect one another. Next projects will look at how spiritual and sexual power have a role to play as vital forces in the imminent encounter between the bodies of late capitalism and the augmented human.
Favreau’s upcoming shows will take place at the Casino du Luxembourg Forum d'art contemporain (Luxembourg), Blue Star Contemporary of San Antonio Art Museum (Texas) and Galerie imMarstall (Ahrensburg). Her recent solo shows include Will Deliquesce, House ofEgorn (Berlin, 2018); From Her Character, BF15 (Lyon, 2018); Holding Rays,Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2017); She Century, Montreal Museum of FineArts (2016); Déli-cat Pulse, Darling Foundry (Montreal, 2016); She Century,Edinburgh Art Festival - Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (2015). She was the recipient of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art(2012) and Pierre-Ayot Award (2014), and was listed for the SobeyArt Award (2018).

Patricia Waller has been working with crochet since the early 1990s and is the first-ever European artist to use needled sculpture as a tool for satire. With a German-style reflective mind, her seemingly - works put forward a question: Canart slip the leash of conventional or mechanic means of production and return to handicraft? While the art world has been going through a drastic formation towards the digital and the virtual, how do we deal with rediscovering the value of manual work? Her way to find the answer was and always has been needling. Instead of domestic objects, Waller’s crochet practice targets the abyss of man heart. Cartoon and fairy tale personas, animals, superheroes... the figures sculptured with yarn, cotton wool and fabrics filling unexpected mishaps, amusing at first sight and cruel at a second glance. Unveiling the dark through the innocent, the harsh through the soft, Waller’s ambivalent aesthetics roots in our turbulent modern existence and its art, commerce, technology, as well as pop culture. In a subversive tongue-in-cheek manner, Waller’s irony and humour are most definitely intentional as a result of careful observations of everyday life and an interest in humanity.

Wallers works have exhibited in major art institutions throughout Europe and America, including At the Circus, Kunstverein Speyer, Germany (2016, solo), The Show Must Go on, Kunsthaus Alte Mühle, Schmallenberg, Germany (2016, solo), Follow the Thread, Museum junge Kunst, Frankfurt Oder, Germany (2011, solo), Neue Masche, Museum Bellerive, Museum für Gestaltung, Zurich, Switzerland (2011, group), Dritto Rovescio, Triannale Design Museum, Milan, Italy (2009, group), Nature All Art, Museum for Arts and Crafts, Hamburg, Germany (2004, group), Atelier 340 / Museum, Brussels, Belgium (2004, group), Skin, Municipal Museum, Jena, Germany (2002, group), Needleworks, Studio exhibition, Municipal Museum Heilbronn, Germany (1997, group), etc. Now she has been a lecturer at art institutions as the University of Cologne.

Fan Haoran (b.1991) was born in Yunnan, China, lives and works in Shanghai. He owns a bachelor degree in Sociology from Wuhan University and a master degree in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Focusing on the coexistence of natural landscapes and human behaviors, Fanuses landscape photography as the entry point to the exploration of self-identity within one’s surroundings. Through reconstructing reality and fiction, he creates a new space which peacefully and poetically states the interaction between objects, human beings and emotions.
