During our current exhibition Undersong: Secrets, Dreams, Truths, and Power, INK studio will present through our WeChat posts The Dreamscape of Chen Haiyan series, providing audio recordings of Chen Haiyan’s own narration of her dream stories behind each of her works.

Fantastic Beasts and their Secret Powers

Another consistently recurrent motif in Chen Haiyan’s dreams is that of fantastic beasts—creatures that are unusual and special, with perhaps supernatural or magical qualities, and even sometimes extraordinary powers. With their appearance comes Chen Haiyan’s sense of curiosity, admiration, respect, sometimes fear, and often sheer wonder.

Game Cat

I was at my teacher Mr. Wang's home with some other girls. Mr. Wang Shouyi and his wife were at home, and we were looking for money. I said to Mr. Wang: “How come there's only one person in the room taking money in and out? It doesn't follow the standard procedure.” There were some pictures painted by Wang's daughter on RMB bills—landscapes with artificial rocks and tiny people. These cannot be used as money, they're only evidence of counterfeiting. We were all talking about this. The man next to me was holding a leather bag with a tiger cat in it. I was playing with the cat. An elephant was nudging my head and neck using its trunk. The other elephants were feeding other animals with dead snakes that they had dragged out. I saw the cat come down and start playing with another black-and-white cat, and patting each other using their paws. Walking on the street I saw an old woman lying there being treated by a woman in black. The woman inserted an obstetric forceps into the old woman's uterus. Standing there, I felt severe pain in my lower belly as if hit by an electric shock.

About “Undersong”

Curated by Dr. Maya Kóvskaya, Undersong: Secrets, Dreams, Truths, and Power is a two-person solo exhibition of artworks by Chen Haiyan and Tao Aimin, which explore the power that is constituted by ordinary women when they share their intimate stories, secrets, truths, and dreams.

The show features works from across nearly four decades of Chen Haiyan’s acclaimed printmaking and ink painting practice, and works from almost two decades of Tao Aimin’s multidisciplinary work. Placing these oft-submerged secrets, dreams, and truths of the lives of ordinary women at the center of their works, their long-standing art practices show the quiet, yet formidable power brought into being through the celebration of the quotidian and the sharing of women’s dreams and intimate stories.
