An art exhibition took place on September 27, 1979 in Beijing when a group of young avant-garde and non-academy trained artists staged an unpermitted exhibition on the railings of the National Art Museum of China after being denied an official exhibition space. The group was called The Stars Art Group (Xing Xing 星星画会), named because they saw themselves as points of light within the endless black.

Some of the artworks were composed of formerly banned styles, while others were expressions of their rebellious thoughts rendered in their own artistic style. They sought to free themselves from the shackles of official art by challenging both aesthetic convention and political authority. Tens of thousands of people attended the exhibition, which was closed by the police after just two days. When the works were removed the artists posted a notice on the Democracy Wall in protest and a mass rally ensued. After discussions with the officials of the Beijing Association of Artists, the group was granted a space to exhibit and held their first formal exhibition: The Stars Art Exhibition (Xing XingMeizhan 星星美展), at Beihai Park, Beijing two months later in November. The exhibition included 163 works by 23 nonprofessional artists. The major numbers are Huang Rui, Ma Desheng, Wang Keping, Yang Yiping, Qu leilei, Mao Lizi, Acheng, Shao Fei, Li Shuang and Ai Weiwei…The Stars Art exhibition was a milestone in China’s contemporary art beginnings. In 1980, the National Art Museum of China invited the Stars to exhibit inside the museum.

The artworks of The Stars Art Group were born from the defiance of their youth. These avant-garde artists challenged the status quo and initiated free artistic expression in the post-Mao era. Their works were a voice of the future within a China that was on the verge of transformation.

Huang Rui

Huang Rui, born in 1952, is revered as one of the seminal figures in shaping contemporary Chinese art. As a leading member of the Star Artists Group, Huang Rui has had significant influence in the post-Cultural Revolution period, whose introduction of international art movements and various artistic styles to the Chinese Contemporary art scene stimulated unanimous interest in exploring abstraction developments. In his own practice, his “Hutong” series in the early 1980s, showed affinity to Cubism. Furthermore, his period of living and working in Japan, allowed him to discover the central principle yin/yang that define his artistic practice.

Huang Rui played a critical role in organizing the two Star Art Exhibitions in 1979 and 1980, one on the fence of the Chinese National Art Gallery, and the other inside Mecca of Chinese art, in both cases. The Star artists challenged the cultural authority through their struggle for personal freedom and artist diversity. His works have been collected by prominent institutions such as Centre Georges Pompidou, France, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea, National Art Museum of China.

李爽

Li Shuang

Li Shuang is the only female member of China's earliest avant-garde art group “The Stars.” Together with other star painting artists Wang Keping, Huang Rui, Ma Desheng, Ai Weiwei and writer Acheng, Beidao, etc., they eagerly strives for the freedom in art. Even-though the exhibition was forbidden by the government, the spirit and courage of the group contributed to the development of Chinese contemporary art in the future. Deeply influenced by Chinese traditional culture, the women in her paintings all have symbolic small cherry mouths and long and thin eyes, whom are typical Eastern beauty. The figures are either contemplating or pondering,  revealing the beauty of classicism. At the same time, the painter also intentionally reveals its  rich and varied spiritual emotions in  a quiet background. Li Shuang once said, “I am the only Chinese woman who draws portraits in a spiritual dimension.” In her creations, the mysterious Oriental women straightforwardly express the most sincere emotions, which is also unique in the blending of Chinese and Western art style practice.

王克平

Wang Keping

Wang Keping was born in Beijing in 1949, he has been living and working in Paris since 1984. Wang was one of the founders of the non-conformist artist group Star Artists Group. Wood is the basic material as well as the source of inspiration. Wang Keping’s sculptures are an exploration of the human form. With a natural intuition of space and balance, they convey a highly sensual representation of the male and female body. Wang reveals the natural contours of the wood: the grain; knots; and colors to evoke figurative representations in his work. His works have been exhibited internationally, including the Centre Geoges Pompidou, Paris; Musee Maillol, Paris; Musee Zadkine, Paris; Kunstmuseum Bern; Brooklyn Museum, New York; The National Art Museum of China; Taipei Fine Arts Museum; M+Museum, Hong-Kong; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
