【缱绻专访】林芳璐:原始生命力的再次诠释

“缱绻——2019芳草地艺术节”已在芳草地画廊与大家见面,这个新鲜的展览汇集了六位各具特色的艺术家,为观众呈现了一场新旧语言、多维方式,跨时代性的缱绻互通的当代艺术展览。芳草地画廊邀请艺术家林芳璐分享她的扎染艺术。


“Qian Quan—2019 Parkview Green Art Festival” is currently on show at Parkview Green Art. This fresh and vibrant exhibition brings together six artists to present a multi-dimensional artistic praxis combining old and new languages. Today artist Lin Fanglu will share insights about her artworks.

扎染情缘

我在云南工作生活了两年多,每天跟当地的手工艺人在一起,这次参加“缱绻”展的作品就是在那个时候做出来的。在当地的生活学习体验,还有当地制作扎染的手工艺人——他们大多是六七十岁的普通劳动妇女,都给了我很多的灵感。


I have been working and living in Yunnan for more than two years and I spent time with local craftsmen every day. The works in this exhibition were created during that period. I lived, studied and experienced craftsmen activities in the area. One of the traditional practices was the tie- dye, made by women in their 60s and 70s. They inspired me a lot.

这些女性大多数没有读过书,甚至连自己的名字都不会写,农忙的时候要去地里干活儿,农闲的时候要做扎染和家里的所有做饭洗衣的家务活儿。就是这样一群朴实的妇女,在这样一个古朴的地方,用这样一种原始的方式,却做出具有如此丰富的肌理表现的东西,从她们手中诞生了我觉得堪称艺术品的呈现。这种鲜明的反差,给了我很大的冲击,我非常感动。

 

Most of these women have never received an education: some of them could not even write their names. They had to work in the fields, to do tie-dye and to take care of the chores of the house.  They work in simple places, almost in primitive conditions but they create works of art with their own hands. The contrast between the primitive living conditions and the elegance of their handicraft touched me deeply.

扎染的完整工序较为复杂

大体分为图案设计、扎花、浸泡煮布、搅拌染色

浸洗搓揉、冲洗固色、阴干拆线等主要步骤

一件作品的完成往往耗时耗力

需要制作者充分的耐心

也因此体现出传统手艺珍贵的独特性


The complete process of tie-dyeing is very complicated, 

and it is roughly divided into main steps such as pattern design, embroider, soaking and boiling fabric, stirring and dyeing, dipping, rinsing, fixing and drying.

The completion of a work is often time-consuming and labor-intensive, 

requiring the patience of the producer, 

and reflecting the unique uniqueness of traditional craftsmanship.




随后我深入学习了扎染的工艺呈现,深知制作一件蓝色花布之前的种种复杂工艺和手工辛勤劳作的智慧,从那时起我就知道,这就是我要找的那个东西,我享受将这种原始的生命力再次诠释的快感。

 

When I was in Yunnan, I studied the technique of tie- dye and I focused on the creation of blue cloth. From that moment on, I knew that this was what I was looking for, and I enjoyed the pleasure of reinterpreting this old tradition.

传统手工艺的延续

传统这个词近些年很时髦,经常被大家时不时的提起。有好多展览活动,也很愿意用传统来做一个切入点。在我看来,传统不是一个噱头而已,因为我们有着共同的、深厚的文化背景,所以传统其实是一直流淌在我们的血液当中的


The word tradition has been very fashionable in recent years, and everyone often talks about it. Many art exhibitions focus on this subject matter. Since we have a common and deeply rooted cultural background, tradition flows in our blood.

我用一些传统的材料去做作品,这是由内向外自然而然地产生的。另外这个词放到我们的当下,它可能指的是过去的某种东西;但是放到过去的特定的时间段,它其实也是当下。所以我也不希望把传统与当下完全的割裂开来。在某些情况下,其实传统也是当下。所以这次主题缱绻,微妙的描绘了这两者之间的关系状态,很有趣。


I use some traditional elements in my works, and this is a natural inclination for me. The other interesting thing about the word tradition is that it carries semantic connotations from the past and therefore it enriches contemporary reality. At the same time, tradition can also be very contemporary and therefore it cannot be completely separated from the present. In some cases, tradition can also refer to the present. Therefore, the theme Qian Quan is very relevant and interesting as it suggests the combination between past and present.

展览主题“缱绻”这个词,强调的是关系的状态,我觉得还挺有意思的。我们每天都生活在各种“关系”当中——人与人的关系,人与物的关系,物与物的关系,包括我的作品里所表现的,其实也一直在探讨传统与现代的关系以及我与作品的关系、我们与其他民族之间的关系,还有作为外来人与当地普通居民的关系,所以能够呈现出很多状态,有的是纠结的,有的是狰狞的,有的是不知所措的。


The theme of the exhibition Qian Quan emphasizes the state of the relationship between the past and the present, which I think is quite interesting. Every day we experience different relationships: the relationship with other people, with objects around us, the relationship between the elements that surround us. My works explore the relationship between tradition and modernity, between me and my art, and the relationship with other people from ethnic minorities and with other local residents. My works reflect different states of mind and feelings.

最后想强调的一点是,一提到传统的文化技艺,惯性思维可能会与旧的、落后的联想到一起,但很多时候,传统的厉害之处,在于当把它们恰当的放到我们当下的生活经验中时依然无比震撼


The last point I would like to emphasize is that sometimes people associate traditional culture with a certain backwardness. However, tradition is very interesting and has a strong influence on us even today.

相对来说,可能我的作品体量比较大。这是因为当我第一次到云南,第一次遇到扎染,它给我的感觉就是如此的丰富、震撼,所以自然而然的就把心中的所有感觉和冲动表达出来了。体量对我来说,是重要的一种表达,可以反应当时的那种内心感受。


My works tend to be larger than the ones usually created by female artists. The first time I went to Yunnan, I saw tie dye- practice for the first time. I was deeply touched by it and I felt the need to express these feelings. Volume is an important artistic expression for me, and it can reflect the inner feelings.

而女性艺术,近年来确实很火。但我没有刻意去表达女性主义。首先我本身就是女性,我要表达的东西,是一定会从一个女性的角度出发的,这是自然而然的,也是必然的。作品起名为《SHE》和《She is Shining》,是因为在我与妇女手工艺人一起工作生活的那段时间,让我看到了很多我从没看到过的东西,也让我体会了很多我从没体会过的感觉,有感动、有心酸、有无奈、有希望······所以,这些作品某种程度上说,是为她们做的。


Women's art is a really hot topic in recent years. However, works of art done by women are not necessarily associated with feminism. I am a woman, so what I want to express is inevitably influenced by a female perspective. The works titled "SHE" and "She is Shining" were created during the time I was working with women in Yunnan. I saw a lot of things I have never seen before, and I also experienced a lot of feelings that I have never experienced before, and this generated in me many different feelings. Therefore, these works are dedicated to these women.

艺术要走到大众里去

我觉得艺术作品跟公众这两者不是对立的,而是相互的一种关系。艺术作品是应该主动的去走进大众的。虽然有的时候观众会说作品看不懂、会说这到底有用还是没用,但是我觉得这并不等于大众在排斥艺术。从另一个角度看,可能就是他们在对这件事情、某件作品发表看法。从他们的人生经历当中是没有办法提取一个经验来解释这件事情的,所以会觉得看不懂,这并不等于说他不懂艺术这件事,只不过是因为观众和这件作品没有共同经验带来的共鸣。我觉得这就是一个艺术与观众互动的过程,而且是趋于良性的互动。



First of all, I think artworks and the public are not in contradiction. I think art should be presented in public spaces. Sometimes maybe viewers might say that a work of art is difficult to understand and might struggle to evaluate whether a work of art is useful or not, however, this doesn’t mean that general viewers dislike art. From another perspective, it may be that they are expressing their perception about a certain work. It doesn’t mean that they don’t understand art, maybe they just don’t establish a communication with a specific work of art. I think the interaction with the public is very important.

我最喜欢的艺术作品是梵高的《星空》,也喜欢电影《梵高》里的那首歌《Starry Starry Night》,我在纽约的MOMA看到《星空》原作的时候,在那张画儿前面站了将近一个钟头,其实喜欢这张画并不是因为它有梵高这个“big name”,而是作品本身有一种非常原始的冲动与活力,这种原始的力量,实在是太震撼了,没办法用语言形容,对这种传达原始生命力的事物,我总是能够很快的感受到其中的力量。

 

My favorite work is Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Sky and the song Starry Starry Night. When I saw the original Starry Sky in MOMA in New York, I stood in front of the painting for nearly an hour. In fact, I like this painting not just because was created by Van Gogh, but because I think that the work itself emanates a strong vitality. This primitive power is so shocking that there is no way to describe it in words. I am always attracted by these works which convey vitality.

活在当下

Live in the moment

 

最近在做一些可以动的、我觉得还算好玩的东西,会继续探讨某些我过去一直使用的元素,也在试着探索一些对我来说新的未知领域,我觉得还挺奇妙的。

 

I've been working on very interesting projects lately and I will continue to explore some of the elements I have been using in the past while experimenting new subject matters and practices.

除了一直在做艺术,我还有另一个身份是设计师,其实我是设计科班出身的,最近做了一些品牌设计、产品设计、室内设计、园区改造等项目,对我来说挺有趣并是极具挑战的。总之就是希望自己趁年轻,多做些事。

 

Beside art, I like also design. I actually graduated from design department. I have benn working on projects including interior design and park renovation: it was challenging, but I hope I will have the chance to do more projects of this kind in the future.

前些年还真的去思考自我定位这个问题,我究竟是谁,要做什么,如果我是一个斜杠青年的话,那我会有几个斜杠呢?是不是如果定位准确也许就会少走一些弯路呢。现在更成熟了一些,发现好像其实这些也没有那么重要,现在我就觉得做自己、做自己觉得有意义的事是最重要的。

 

In the past few years, I thought about the issue of self-positioning: Who am I and what do I want to do? Is it possible to take a few detours before finding your own path? Now I am more mature, and it seems that these issues are no longer so important. Now I feel that the most important thing is to be myself: focusing on what I feel is very meaningful.
