Elisabeth Plank Looove #06 , 2017, Acrylic on canvas Courtesy the artist
Elisabeth Plank’s oeuvre does not create a style, nor is it rooted in any school or any idealism –it is just the product of her own basic attitude. Her work consistently undergoes multi-facetted metamorphoses without putting their authenticity at risk. It is never a final statement but rather a momentary expression reflecting the temporary stop in a permanent exploration and an unerring affirmation of the medium of painting, which speaks directly from her work. In a playful way she is able to balance over different stylistic means, always receptive to all manner of inspiration. Notwithstanding the many facets her oeuvre springs forth from its own drive, yielding to an inner impulse.

Elisabeth Plank Episode und Bildaufbau, 2011, Acrylic on canvas Courtesy the artist
Episode und Bildaufbau is an example of her poetic pictorial compositions that appeals less to the mind and more to the soul. It shows schematic figures that sink back into the chromatic fog. Events or connections are evoked in a dreamlike way only to evade interpretation as a pure chromatic structure.Since 2017 Elisabeth Plank has been developing series of purely abstract paintings from the basic motifs of moving amorphous shapes deploying concentrically from the middle. The alleged void in their center is activated by whirling formations and laden with ideal meaning. Whereas the vibrating shapes of Looove #06 still conveyed an agitated emotionality, in the later SHAPES series these forms seem to move on the ground of the painting with a sovereign assuredness in a calm, solid sensitivity.

Elisabeth Grübl, Go to the left_go to the right, 2011, Courtesy the artist
The concept artist Elisabeth Grübl likes to define herself as someone who thinks in terms of space. Space is the approach on which she draws – the architectural as well as the non-material, personal, political or public space. She creates installations inside and outdoors, making inroads in existing orders and giving the place and structure a new content.Text objects such as “Go to the left – go to the right” work with overlapping diametrically opposed concepts whose meaning is superseded. The superposed letters are laden with ambiguous meaning and are intended to move the public away from everyday life and lead them into a space where they can reflect on their own actions.

Together with Sabine Heine, she intervened in the script on the shop window of a hip design shop. In a fly-by-night action “Be a good girl!” was transformed into “Be a bad girl!” It reflected a social critique of the assigned role clichés as they are, for instance, propagated in that prominent façade in public space. Two weeks the interventionheld, before the entire writing disappeared.

Elisabeth Grübl, Studio # 21 Yang Shu, 2015, Sculpture / Photography Courtesy the artist
Space is also the subject of Elisabeth Grübl’s studio compressions. For this group of works the artist arranged everything that was in the studio into a precise cube. A temporary sculptural compression in the empty space is the event. Furniture, equipment and artifacts are on a par and based on purely logistic criteria they become artwork and cubic artist portrait. Even the artistic director of the Galaxy Museum, Yang Shu, was not spared. His studio was converted into the exhibition space. Following the exhibition, he himself proceeded to dismantle the sculpture, with a photograph remaining to document the work.
Elisabeth Grübl (* 1961) /Manfred Grübl (* 1965)

The artist siblings Elisabeth and Manfred Grübl appear as autonomous artists but at the same time they have been doing works and projects together since 1994. The collaboration has arisen spontaneously and temporarily out of contents they use together. The works comprise indoor and outdoor installations with a wide range of media: video, laser and sound pieces, computer animations, interactive installations, context-specific works, objects, concepts and photographs.

Some installations intervene directly and manipulate the reception, as in the case of the massage mats mounted on the exhibition wall. The public was encouraged to use them individually. The silence gave way to the sound of engines vibrating in the background, whiles the aesthetic object-like intervention was transformed into a stage, whose actors became the public.

Grübl& Grübl Elisabeth Grübl / Manfred Grübl Untitled, 2002, Video sculpture, Animation Courtesy the artists
The video installation titled Untitled consisting of three monitors arranged in a row is a blocky sculptural intervention in space. A black horizontal strip emerges from the white ground, crosses the monitors from left to right only to then disappear on the right edge and reappear again left. The continuous silent movement unerringly draws its virtual path. The purist object-like video sculpture juxtaposes the otherwise common use of a screen, the theater of the TV world, with its loud and garish fast pace and minimal continuity. The maximum deceleration of animation (in 2002) generates a continuity in space and time that has its own life, detached from consumption and spectacle, an antithesis in the art scene that is increasingly assimilating the event status.
