Founded in Copenhagen in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Rasmus Nielsen and Bjørnstjern Christiansen. Superflex describe their projects as “Tools”, as proposals that invite people to participate and communicate in the development of experimental models that alter the economic production conditions. These socially conscious actions are liberatory rather than utopian, intended to produce individual and collective change, with the projects functioning as replicable models and tools made available through the free distribution of instructions. Works like Superchannel, Biogas Superkilen, Hospital Equipment and One Two Three Swing! propose solutions to real problems, such as sourcing and delivering necessary surgical equipment to hospitals in conflict areas, developing local and efficient alternative fuel sources or creating a common space for community discourse can occur. For example, One Two Three Swing! - their solo exhibition program in the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern for the Hyundai Commission - challenges society’s apathy towards the political, environmental and economic crises of our age. The installation is experienced in three states: apathy, production and movement. The act of resting in contemplation is set in contrast to the liberating, collaborative experience of swinging together. Over time the work will evolve as it continues to grow and new swings are added into the wider world.

In our current climate where movements, transactions and relations are constantly registered and analyzed the access to data is equal to power. ALL DATA TO THE PEOPLE, a hand-painted mural that can be translated into any language, points out the asymmetry in the access to data, the right to information and distribution of power we are experiencing, and how the value of data is concentrated to very few commercial and state players. We are who we are registered as.

SUPERFLEX projects examine the dynamics and dependencies created by economic systems and develop tools to be used in constructive transformations.
