Painting, one category of visual art, has a very intuitive expression without much preaching, only because of accumulation of the long history. Lines, colors, and structures constitute the basic elements of painting technique. After experiencing modernism, painters have kept those three elements deeply in mind. As the soul of figurative painting, content is nothing more than a tool, just like fishing tools or the raft for people crossing the river. However, personal ways of painting make these elements get rid of artificial intentions. The picture has its own visual meaning during the time of drawing. Everything is destined.

Stand Together

2 Contemporary Art -2

"Bath with Me" actually echoes current social situations. Not only China, which is suffering from the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), but also other parts of the world is tied to disasters, such as Australia, which has just ended its forest fire crisis, and Africa, where occurs a worst locust plague in decades. Local economies are more or less affected. In spite of different cultures, cultural barriers cannot hinder the spiritual "bathing" of people from different areas. People support each other, and think about how society will develop and how to make tomorrow better.

About the artist

Yuan Yuan

Yuan Yuan (b. 1973), has earned international critical acclaim through his distinctive paintings, executed with impeccable technique and conveying a unique atmosphere. He studied in the Oil Painting Department of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where he gained a Bachelors and later a Master degree in Fine Arts in 1996 and 2008 respectively. His subjects are often interiors; some are grand structures such as great halls with neo-classical arches, others from more modest structures such as entrances and corridors of old apartment buildings. These are based on real places mainly in China, but with imaginary elements added to impose Yuan Yuan’s own system of design. All share a sense of abandonment, offering just a glimpse of their former glory. Yuan has had solo exhibitions at Palazzo Terzi, Italy, Galerie Malingue, Paris, and ShanghART, among others. Group exhibitions include The 12th Shanghai Biennale; ROH projects, Jakarta; and White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney, among others.

Zheng Zhou

Zheng Zhou (b.1969) was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. A graduate from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Printmaking from 1990 to 1994, Zheng worked at the Printmaking Department of the China Academy of Arts from 1994 to 1996. Since 2000, Zheng Zhou has been a lecturer at the China Academy of Art Affiliated High School for 10 years. Zheng relocated to Beijing where he has been working as an artist since 2013. Delineated contours, a subconscious blur of decipherable imagery and extraneous elements, a wistful expressive tide between the figurative and the abstract; Zheng Zhou is a painter of instinct, conveying onto canvas observations from the world, as ad hoc as they may be. His strokes, furtive yet decisive, depict an urgency - to grasp, to depict, to capture that mesmeric multitude of the cosmos, the ‘phenomena’ we, or more precisely he, is a witness to.
