The duo exhibition of Tao Hui and Kohei Maeda, ‘Methods of Connection’ at The Kyoto Art Center is presented on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Kyoto Art Centre. ‘Methods of Connection’ displays works that highlight the process of creation through memories and experiences in the form of digital imagery. On view is Tao Hui’s video installation, ‘Hello, Finale!’ (2017).
‘Hello, Finale!’ (2017) is the multi-channel video work the artist created specially for this exhibition. The series of nine videos is arranged in an orderly array within the exhibition space, which emphasize the intertextual and parallel relationships between the content of the work; it is also a selective viewing experience akin to surfing channels. The artist person-ally composed the script for each story! and finally presents the incomplete, one-way dialogues uttered over the telephone by protagonists who appear on camera. This work, shot in Kyoto, is from the setting to the performance imbued with that distinctive mood found in Japanese TV series, series which are much loved by the masses. However, the spoken parts in Japanese relate stories rewritten based on news from Chinese society as well as from the artist's personal experience. These clips, with their sense of distance and yet familiarity, all echo the sense of finitude, which forms their main theme.
