Vis-à-Vis means “face to face”
“We wanted to capture both the metaphorical facing of our Western and Eastern artistic lives, alongside the literal sitting across from each other when performing at our instruments as an ever-regenerating creative encounter”
Vis-à-Vis was written for especially built portable instruments, meant to fit into Passepartout Duo’s suitcase as they travel the world.
The instruments are not perfect like the ones that you would find in a music shop, but the artisanal value and the way that they resonate with the performers on stage is a completely unique experience. Together, the instruments become a human organism, pulling also the audience into a ritual atmosphere and communal rhythm.
The Long Train Journey - taking Vis-à-Vis across Asia
Reflecting on the themes of creativity, mobility, and sustainability, Passepartout Duo embarked this year on a new creative journey. During the summer, we spent three months on an artist residency in Switzerland (Embassy of Foreign Artists), where they had the time to design and build original handmade musical instruments. These instruments were created by using scrap wood and metal materials that they found on the streets of the city. The instruments have some restrictions, like a limited range of sounds, but these limitations became a source of inspiration for new musical compositions. The idea of recycling material to create art, and to use creativity to address the limitations is something that makes this project unique.
This is the itinerary that we followed:
Tbilisi - Baku: train (12 hours)
Baku - Aktau: boat (30 hours)
Aktau - Beyneu: train (8 hours)
Beyneu - Nukus: train (14 hours)
Nukus - Khiva: taxi (6 hours)
Khiva - Bukhara: train (6 hours)
Bukhara - Tashkent: train (4 hours)
Tashkent - Almaty: train (17 hours)
Almaty - Urumqi: bus (24 hours)
Urumqi - Shanghai: train (41 hours)
Total hours by trains, cars, and boats: 162 hours
Our four bags accompanied us throughout our whole journey, alongside the small portable instruments we brought from city to city.
Passepartout Duo is traveling all the time, but travel is not considered as a mere commodity (holidays) or a boring inconvenience (commuting). The travel becomes a creative act in itself, and a way to connect to people through music. That’s why we decided to connect Europe and China by land in this trip: the travel started in Tbilisi, Georgia, on September 28th, continued through Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, continued through Western China all the way until Shanghai. During the trip we organized five concerts in very diverse locations: an art venue, an art gallery, the roof of a caravanserai, a music conservatory, and a cafe-bar.
This trip was very important in addressing another interesting theme: sustainability. In a time where everybody is discussing climate change, also artists and musicians are invited to reflect upon their practice in a new context, and to find alternative ways to connect to the planet, and to our future through actions in the present. Taking the trains instead of flying was a way to explore ways of travel that could possibly be less polluting, or create more connections with communities along the way.
AnyOne (ZZYP + Yumo) and Passepartout Duo (Nicoletta Favari & Christopher Salvito) met in Iceland in the Winter of 2017. There, they completed their first artwork together, a three minute song that meant to accompany the three minutes of sunlight added each day after the winter solstice.
Since then, their Iceland album project called Ólafsfjörður, sought to capture into ethereal music the place of its namesake, a small town of 800 people just half a degree south of the arctic circle.
The collaboration continued together when Passepartout Duo spent one month in Beijing at AnyOne’s designated studio space called “Semi-Underground Space”. A short introduction to many local friends and artists was enough to spark new creative ideas with local painters (Jia Jing), furniture designers (Su Yuan), and dancers (LiKehua & MaYue).
About the Artists
Passepartout Duo is a music group comprised of pianist Nicoletta Favari and percussionist Christopher Salvito. Making music that escapes categorization, the duo’s ongoing travel around the world informs the multi-disciplinary collaborations, instrumental compositions, and evocative music videos that constitute their body of work. The musical events they create focus on reconsidering the modalities in which people listen to and connect with music, and are cast from a wide range of aesthetics and disciplines.
During a month-long train journey across Central Asia, the duo performed music for portable handmade instruments that they created from scrap materials during their residency at the Embassy of Foreign Artists in 2019 (CH). The group’s Sound Envelopes project, featuring electronic musical postcards that connect people and places through sound, was presented at the Nakanojo Biennale in 2019 (JP).
The duo’s debut EP, a collaborative project with visual artists Yumo Wu and Yannis Zhang (CN), took inspiration from a small fishing village in the north of Iceland, called Ólafsfjörður (2018). The album has been broadcasted on Melbourne's PBS, BBC 3 in the UK, Rai Radio 3 in Italy, and Chongqing Music FM 88.1 in China.
Passepartout Duo’s project throughout the Nordic countries in 2018 involved collaborations with composers and artists in northern Europe. The project was met with support from the Nordic Culture Fund and Nordic Culture Point, and was presented at the Dark Music Days Festival (IS) and the Summartónar Festival (FO).
The ensemble has performed at prominent music festivals like the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (US), the Festival de La Habana de Música Contemporánea (CU), and the Sounding Now Festival (SG). The duo was also awarded an ensemble fellowship at Eighth Blackbird’s inaugural Creative Lab in 2017.
Passepartout Duo is currently among the artists in residence at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China.
