Shirin Neshat’s artwork Speechless(1996) is from Faurschou collection.

Shirin Neshat (b. 1957, Qazvin, Iran) is a New York-based visual artist, best known for her work in film, video, and photography. In her work, Shirin Neshat examines the divisions between the Islamic and Western worlds, male and female, tradition and modernity.

Her photo-series Women of Allah contain a dual perspective: In Speechless and other images from the series, a weapon is a visible element, presenting the women as strong and militant. At the same time, the women are dressed in chador, uncovering just their faces, hands, and feet.

Across the woman’s face, Neshat has handwritten verses by the Iranian poet Tahereh Saffarzadeh.
