'SCoP's latest exhibition "Beyond Fashion" includes the works of Mario Testino, a master photographer who it seems has never taken a bad portrait. His images are always sexy, beautiful, and enduring.'

Mario Testino is one of the most popular and famous photographers in the fashion industry. The artistry of his work goes far beyond just fashion. Testino was born in 1954 in Lima, Peru. From humble beginnings he became personal photographer to Diana, Princess of Wales. Continuing through to today, Testino still receives regular commissions from royal families around the world, including Britain’s Prince of Wales, the Duke, and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and the King and Queen of Jordan, among others. But still he says: ‘One of the greatest experiences in life was photographing Princess Diana. It did not begin as a tribute. When the photoshoot took place, the Princess was happy and, I believe, looking forward to her new life without Charles. The photos are truly beautiful as Diana was beautiful.’

What won Testino his greatest fame are his portraits, the extraordinary way in which he can capture the most private of moments and make each a perfect blend of erotic sensuality and modern elegance. People describe the distinctive charm of a Testino photograph as capturing their energy by creating openness and intimacy with them, the result always a combination of sexy, beautiful, and noble. ‘People love being photographed by him,’ says Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. ‘He has a natural sensitivity to fashion.’ But, equally, his intimate portraits offer the viewer a new perspective on a famous face, often establishing a new fashion icon in the process.

Testino’s artistic language goes beyond gender, as he mixes the masculine with the feminine to achieve a sensual rather than a sexual mood. Suzy Menkes, Vogue magazine’s International Editor explains Testino’s skill as ‘first and foremost to catch the moment and to bring out the humanity in his subjects.’
