‘She is amazing,’ says Ellen von Unwerth of super sexy super star Rihanna. ‘I shot some of her first picture when she was sixteen. She’s so out there to push it, so giving, so beautiful, so up for anything. It was a really hot day, we did this boxing story in the studio. There was a shitty little shower in the studio. It was so hot from jumping around, I said “Come on! Let’s just do a picture in the shower.” It’s such a cute moment. Her smile is so sweet and spontaneous and somehow innocent, but still naughty.”

German photographer Ellen von Unwerth is best known for her playfully erotic images of female pop musicians and models. Over the course of her career, the artist has photographed Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Rihanna, among many others. ‘Technique undoubtedly helps make photography magical, but I prefer to work with atmosphere,’ von Unwerth says. Born in Germany in 1954, she was discovered by a model-scout in Munich at 20 years old. Relocating to Paris, she earned a living as a model for the next 10 years. After a decade as a model, she started to feel that the industry was missing an element of freedom. Receiving a camera as a gift from her boyfriend, she began to take her own pictures, which eventually led to an improvised photo-shoot in Africa of her model colleagues. Von Unwerth soon developed a passion for photography.

In 1989, she shot Claudia Schiffer for a Guess fashion campaign, a commission which effectively launched her career. Since then, Von Unwerth’s images have appeared in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, and other publications She has also shot campaigns for brands such as Dior, John Galliano, Ralph Lauren, and UniQlo. In 1991, von Unwerth won first prize at the International Festival of Fashion Photography, and in 1998 American Photo Magazine named her as one of the most important people in photography. In 2017, she was the subject of the exhibition “Ellen von Unwerth Heimat” at Taschen Gallery in Los Angeles, coinciding with a book launch of the same name.

‘This is one of my favorite Kate Moss pictures. It was a made for American Vogue, a ’60s-inspired story of a girl arriving in Paris and trying to make it. I love to make up stories, to give more of a character, so they’re not just pretty, but they’re also acting a little bit. In this picture, Kate’s in the cinema. We don’t know what she’s looking at. Everybody can fantasize about it, I love that about it.’

Rich Bitch, Paris

‘She’s shopping and she doesn’t care. The guy’s almost chasing her. It’s so funny, but it’s also very glamorous. It’s very Parisian. It’s a little bit of critique too but, as always, with humor. I always love to play with the positions. She’s a rich woman and she’s with the people and then her husband cuts her credit card. And she gets kicked out of town and she has to survive. She becomes a dog walker and sleeps in a pot, She has to sell all her bags. ‘ This work is now on show in SCoP. Come check it out!
