ART021 ANNOUNCES GALLERY LIST FOR ITS 8TH EDITION

The highly anticipated eighth edition of ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair will take place from November 12 to 15 at Shanghai Exhibition Center. 104 world’s leading galleries from 17 countries and 42 cities were selected to present contemporary art and design by established and emerging artists, providing an in-depth overview of contemporary art through a variety of media, ranging from painting and sculpture to video and installation. 

While the global situation still remains precarious, this year’s ART021 convenes a robust roster of galleries. More than 60% of the galleries come from various countries and regions, stretching from Europe, North America, East Asia to the Middle East. Local galleries continue to be strongly presented in the 2020 edition: 80% of galleries have spaces in China and other regions in Asia. 

ART021 reinforces its ongoing commitment to leveraging local recourses with a global perspective, and practices its social responsibility with an innovative spirit of openness and continuous exploration. Meanwhile, ART021 spares no effort to provide galleries, museums, art institutions and collectors with an important  platform for development and exchange. In the face of challenges, ART021 complied with the current situation and actively make careful  alteration, extended the exhibition to online platform, and launched the PLATFORM unit for the first time, to provide galleries and collectors with a high-quality online display platform, assisting the art market thrive.

MAIN GALLERIES presents 60 premiere galleries focusing on 20th and 21st century contemporary art. 6 galleries join the fair for the first time including 3125C GALLERIA (Los Angeles), AISHONANZUKA (Hong Kong/Tokyo), BEING 3 GALLERY (Beijing), COSPACE (Shanghai), HARMONY ART (Shanghai), USELESS SPACE (Shanghai).

DETOUR, the section by invitation investigates discourses from regions beyond the Euro-American fabricated geographic networks and canonized narratives, in a hope to understand artistic, intellectual, social, political, and economic exchanges and developments on a global scale from different viewpoints. 5 invited galleries from China, France, the U.S and Iran join forces to map out the renewed sensibility and influence from the regions, including DASTAN’S BASEMENT (Tehran), BALICE HERTLING (Paris), NICODIM GALLERY (Los Angeles), TABULA RASA GALLERY (Beijing), GALLERY VACANCY (Shanghai).

APPROACH supports the development of young galleries across the world by applying a different pricing model than the main section. Participating galleries will present either a solo or a group show featuring fewer than three artists with a curatorial approach. This year’s APPROACH presents 15 promising galleries with 9 first-time participants includes: 1-ART GALLERY (Shanghai), D-SPACE (Chengdu), EAST GALLERY (Nanjing), L·AN GALLERY  (Shenzhen), POLAR BEAR GALLERY  (Beijing/Shanghai), POST1198 (Paris), TOKU GALLERY (Nanjing), WOOTON-GALLERY  (Changsha), YIDIANCHINA (Beijing).

BEYOND transcends the spatial limitation of traditional art-fair booths. It showcases large-scale paintings, sculptures and installations in the public area of ART021. BEYOND-EXTENDS integrates contemporary art installations into public life by placing them in the public spaces outside the fair. Through artist collaborations, BEYOND-EXTENDS promotes public art in China and engages with the local Shanghai community. This year’s BEYOND-EXTENDS will expand the scope to cover a number of commercial complexes, infiltrating city corners with more various public art projects.
