The preceding perilous months have seen unwelcome restrictions present unexpected opportunities. The inability to diversify personal environments has led to a reexamination of daily ablutions - explorations of inti-macies which might otherwise be taken for granted - a deepening of relationships which might otherwise have never occurred.
▎Gao Weigang, “Forget Myself Rather Than You - A” Oil on canvas, 200x200cm, 2020
▎Jiang Zhi, “The Unmade Idol - 2” Oil on polyester, 104x74.5cm, 2019The works in the exhibition have, for the most part, been produced in the period since the pandemic first emerged in the early part of this year. The pieces on display are not a specific response to the pandemic but rather focus on a narrow scope of production within the broader practices of each of the participating artists - an island resort if you will within each of their respective oeuvres.
▎Shi Zhiying, “Cave of Ten Thousand Buddhas 5” Oil on canvas, 240x180cm, 2020
▎Li Wenguang, “Science Fiction Notes - 20” Gel pen, oil painting, resin, paper collage on board, 200x120cm, 2018-2020This approach is designed to showcase the diversity of expression that may lie within the focus on a single subject, a single technique or a single form. The exhibition provides compartments of imagery each inviting a repose in the theatre and threat of discovery.
