Craig Easton weaves abstracted text into his geometric paintings to achieve a bold contemporary take on the
legacy of Constructivism and agitprop. As painting cannot divorce itself from language, language itself
becomes visual, like the calligraphic traditions in China or Western concrete poetry that explored a multi-
sensorial application of language beyond the narrative. These are abstract paintings that the viewer is meant
to move through and into; be reflected by like mirror pools or sucked into its black void. As an avid
researcher of both Chinese literati gardens and Western formalism, Easton’s paintings become an axis that
anchors the continual play of opposites- western geometry and Chinese portals, industry and poetry.
