1960年代,画廊第一时间向日本介绍如Lucio Fontana(卢西欧·丰塔纳)、Yves Klein(伊夫·克莱因)、Jackson Pollock(杰克逊·波洛克)、Friedensreich Hundertwasser(佛登斯列·汉德瓦萨或百水先生)等西方艺术家展览,同时积极为高松次郎、白髪一雄、冈本太郎等引领日本当代艺术发展的艺术家们举办展览。
Tokyo Gallery, the first contemporary art gallery of its kind in Tokyo, was founded in 1950. Located in Tokyo’s Ginza district, the gallery celebrated its 60thanniversary in 2010. From its inception, the gallery’s core operations centred on the works of modern Japanese figurative painters such as Chōkai Seiji(1956), Yorozu Tetsugorō (1957) and Kayama Matazō. In 1958, following a recommendation by art critic TakiguchiShūzō, the gallery was host to an exhibition by Saito Yoshishige.
In the 1960s, the gallery was a forerunner in introducing a series of Western avant-garde artists to Japanese audiences, among whom Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Jackson Pollock and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Meanwhile, it was also instrumental in supporting experimental projects by now internationally-renownedJapanese artists, including Takamatsu Jirō, Shiraga Kazuo, Okamoto Tarō and members of the Mono-ha movement. Tokyo Galleryintroduced their artworks to international audiences through art fairs, collaborations in biennales and acclaimed exhibitions at major museums.
In the 1970s, the gallery began working with Korean artists such as Kim Whangki, Lee Ufan, Kim Tschang-Yeul and Park Seo-Bo. From the 1980’s onward, it also began exhibiting hitherto unknown Chinese artists including Xu Bing and Cai Guoqiang, thus taking on the role of signalling beacon for Asian contemporary art with a focus on China, Japan and Korea. In 2002, the gallery opened a new space named BTAP in the now world-renowned Beijing 798 Art District, marking the establishment of TokyoGallery + BTAP. Under its new moniker, the gallery’s Beijing location organized a series of experimental exhibitions from the 1990’s onward, actively spreading Chinese contemporary art to the world via such large-scale academic exhibition projects as Beijing “UKIYOE”, Prayer Beads and Brush Strokes and What is Mono-ha?.In so doing, it left a positive impact on the Chinese contemporary art world, allowing it to further its mission of discovering and promoting both established and emerging artists. In recent years, exhibition planning at Tokyo Gallery + BTAP has primarily revolved around an exhibition series themed around the notion of Neo-Mōrōism. This[Neo-Mōrōism]project aims to integrate the unique experience of East Asian modernity and explore the possibilities of art while striving to establish an underlying aesthetic vision.
