Since the beginning of time, Chinese ancients looked to nature and its elements for truth and meaning. Through the ages, many attempted to derive philosophical insight from life and all beings. Today we are still on this road of fulfilment, piecing together the clues and threads along the way.
Su Shi of the Northern Song dynasty (1037 - 1101) offered profoundly influential theories of calligraphy aesthetics, exploring the law and principles behind non-fixed forms such as flowing clouds and water, and philosophical constitution of rocks, bamboos and trees.
If we were to place LuanChong’s work into a specific style or school, I would say he is an artist striving to extend the scope of the Chinese Painting Language.
His earlier works focused on artistic expression through traditionally western mediums such as oil paint and acrylic. In the past two years, he gradually moved to traditionally Chinese mediums such as calligraphy ink, rice paper, decayed wood and lacquer.
Following a self-enforced disciplined approach, LuanChong reconstructs the genre of Chinese landscape painting through collage, rubbing and brush techniques. An emotional description of the harmonious relationship between nature and man, his works are mysterious, deepening and quiet. There is a sense of balance amongst the stubborn and unyielding mottled mountain-like shapes.
Showing subtle hints of his creative attitude and embedded understanding of life, LuanChong finds a way to awaken ancient and far away memories. In this display of a truth beyond the physical reality and emotional impression, he gives it a specific term “contour”.
The《Mountain Watching》Lin LuanChong Solo Exhibition curated by B-joy, will bring together a series of his canvas works and lacquer sculpture installation. This will also be our first official B-joy art exhibition since our recent brand revamp and opening of the B-joy Art Shop. We will be continuing our past commitment and focus on contemporary photography, while furthering the scope and diversity of our curation interests. Thus, this also marks a new beginning for B-joy.
