The first museum exhibition for OSGEMEOS, the famous Brazilian artist duo, was open to public at Fosun Foundation on December 31, 2020. The artists’ works in recent years, including paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations, are currently on show. OSGEMEOS’ works represent a blend of Brazilian culture and contemporary elements as a result of the influences from their family and Brazilian hip-hop culture.
From the 1990s, OSGEMEOS started to create systematically, searching for their original style. During this period, they painted graffiti pieces in the downtown of St. Paul; they also encountered American graffiti artist Barry McGee, who significantly influenced their artistic style. In the late 1990s, their work received recognition at an international graffiti event in Germany.

Since the Millennium, the artists kept maturing their artistic style. The yellow-skinned figures started to appear in their works, and gradually transformed from the animated characters on their graffiti pieces into a symbolic figure which has become their most distinctive feature. The yellow skin color indicates a universal figure, rather than a direct reference to a specific race or culture, which reflects the highly diverse population of Brazil and the world.
At the same time, they frequently initiated works and held exhibitions all over the world, including San Francisco, Athens, New York, Barcelona, London, and St. Paul. During the 2004 Olympics, they were invited to perform art interventions in Athens, Greece. There they presented a Giant for the first time, and hereafter creating gigantic figures becomes one of the artists’ hallmarks.

OSGEMEOS have been trying to use discarded doors and mirrors (and other reflective surfaces) to signal access to another realm or an entry point to the psyche, taking audiences into their surreal world. In 2010, a mural depicting the universe ‘Tritrez’, a crucial concept in the artists’ works, was presented to the full extent at the St.Paul Museum of Modern Art.
In the past decade, OSGEMEOS have initiated multimedia art works across the world. In 2015, the artists brought their work Parallel Connection to the Midnight Moment action in Times Square, New York. They also further developed their yellow-skinned figures by not confining them to their physical image but using them to represent abstract things. While the artists work continually to consummate the concept of their universe ‘Tritrez’, they have also collaborated with the British artist Banksy and the French photographer JR to expand the boundaries of their works.

This time, the Cloud Salon will invite OSGEMEOS to have an online talk with Dr. Shen Qilan, a famous curator, writer and cultural scholar, and Mr. Mário Antonio de Araújo, Deputy Consul General for the Federative Republic of Brazil in Shanghai. The talk will be an in-depth discussion over the art career of OSGEMEOS in a chronological order. Mr. Mário Antonio de Araújo will share his experience and feelings of visiting this exhibition from a Brazilian standpoint. He will then talk about the artists’ cultural influences and motives for creation based on Brazilian cultures. Dr. Shen Qilan will have a dialogue with the artists on the different periods in their art career from multiple aspects, including the evolution of their styles, artistic creation in public space, and collaborations with remarkable artists.
OSGEMEOS, the artist duo, were born in St. Paul, Brazil, in 1974, and are now living and working in the same city. Solo exhibitions of the artists’ work have been organized at many museums and galleries across the world, including The Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2018); Museu Casa do Pontal, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2015); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2012); Berardo Collection Museum, Lisbon (2010); and Museum Het Domein, Sittard, Netherlands (2007).
