埃里克·裴欧(Eric PILLOT,出生于1968年)以独特的摄影视角,研究人与自然以及周围环境的关系。他作为工程师的教育背景为其创作增添了一份独特的数理美感。他坚持以“纯粹摄影”的方式,在展现主体本来面貌的同时,创造出另一个充满诗意的图像世界。

裴欧广为人知的摄影系列包括:早期的《熊》,《动物园》,2010年至今的《此处 IN SITU》,2012年至今的《地平线 HORIZONS》,2015年的《此处-美国 IN SITU USA》以及2016年至今的《隔墙 PAROIS》


Born in 1968, Eric PILLOT is devoted to studying the relationship between humans, our surroundings, and nature through his unique perspective of photography. Pillot's engineer background adds a unique sense of mathematical and scientific aesthetics to his works. He prefers to use "straight photography" to show the subject as it looks, but at the same time to bring you elsewhere, poetic and pictorial. 

Pillot's well-recognized series include the early series D'OURS (Bears), ZOOIN SITU (since 2010), HORIZONS (since 2012), IN SITU USA (since 2010), and PAROIS (since 2016).

投身摄影事业之前,埃里克∙裴欧先后毕业于法国最顶尖的两所工程学院巴黎综合理工大学(École Polytechnique, 1988-1991)和ENSTA(École Nationale Supérieure de Techniques Avancées,1991-1993),随后以工程师的身份在法国国防部工作了整整7年,从事军工造船。

裴欧最早接触的艺术门类其实是音乐,他自幼学习古典乐,读书时学习爵士打击乐,也正是他的爵士乐老师充分肯定了裴欧对艺术的敏锐感,鼓励他继续发展。几年后,在一次去希腊的旅行中,裴欧偶然发现摄影是表达自身独特视角的最佳方式。

为了支持自己的摄影事业,裴欧为此放弃了受人尊崇的工作,后于2002年取得了法国高等院校数学教师资格证,成为了一名数学老师,以便有稳定的收入和更多的时间用于摄影。裴欧的教育背景为其作品增添了一份独特的数理美感。

I took photography as a tool that communicates my thoughts about the feelings towards men, the future, and the differences... It is more interesting than describing merely in words.

Prior to his photography career, Eric Pillot graduated from the École Polytechnique (1988-1991) and ENSTA (École Nationale Supérieure de Techniques Avancées, 1991-1993), two of the top engineering schools in France, then worked as an engineer in the field of military shipbuilding at the French Ministry of Defense from 1993 to 2000. 

Pillot's encounter with the arts starts with music. He studied classical music at a young age and jazz drumming while studying, and it was his jazz teacher who fully recognized Pillot's artistic acumen and encouraged him to continue developing it. A few years later, during a trip to Greece, he discovered photography, something perfect for him to express how he sees things differently. 


In order to support his photography pursuit, Pillot gave up his respectable job, and later in 2002, obtained the French higher education mathematics teaching certificate. Being a maths teacher offers financial means and more free time. Pillot's educational background adds a unique sense of mathematical and scientific aesthetics to his works.

开始的几年对裴欧来说并不容易,外界和家人都很难理解他的选择,但在承受各方压力的同时,他也体会着把自己特有的能力挖掘出来的欣喜。2004年,裴欧偶然在动物园看到在水中玩耍的北极熊,它们开心得像一群孩子,这个梦幻般的场景让裴欧难以忘怀。


不久后,裴欧开始流连于动物园,以黑白摄影的方式创作,直至2010年的彩色系列“In Situ 此处"。他时刻注意着面前的动物等待着它们在某个特定时刻与周围场景装饰融为一体拍摄的整个过程可能只需要几秒,但等待“平衡”到来的瞬间需要很好的耐心。同时,裴欧想把动物表现成生命体,而不是具体的动作场景。例如,那只猴子是其物种的代表,而不是一只正在吃苹果的猴子。

One of the greatest gifts of studies I think is intellectual freedom.

The first few years were not easy for Pillot. It was difficult for the outside world and his family to understand his choice, but while under great pressure, he also experienced the joy of tapping into his unique abilities. One day in 2004, Pillot happened to see polar bears swimming and playing at the zoo, like a group of children, a dreamlike scene that Pillot could not forget.


Pillot began to walk full-days in these zoos. He worked in black and white photography until his color series "In Situ" in 2010. He kept walking around and constantly paying attention to the animals, waiting for a decisive moment when the animal seemed to be a part of the artificial decors. The shooting process might take only a few seconds, but it takes great patience to wait for a “balance” to be achieved. Besides, he wishes to represent the animals as living beings rather than objects with actions. For instance, that monkey in his photos is a representation of his species rather than a monkey eating an apple.

2012年,裴欧从500名候选者中脱颖而出获得了由法国文化部支持且享有盛名的HSBC(汇丰银行)摄影大奖,他的获奖摄影系列《此处 In Situ》运用独特的视角,弱化了动物被“关”的现实,描绘了离我们咫尺之遥的动物的孤独,同时创造出一个充满诗意和色彩的世界,这都归功于艺术家对于光影的完美追求及洗印照片时的细致严谨。


In 2012, Pillot was selected from 500 candidates to receive the prestigious HSBC Photography Award, supported by the French Ministry of Culture, for his award-winning series "In Situ", which uses a unique perspective to diminish the reality of animals being "locked up" and portray the loneliness of animals just a stone's throw away from us. This is due to the artist's pursuit of perfection in light and shade and the meticulousness of the prints.

 地平线,孤独的旅行者 

 Horizons, A Lone Traveller 




当我成天待在动物园里,我觉得自己就和这些动物一样,被困在这些人造的地方,我要去真正自然、 没有限制的地方,亲身感受风雨的洗礼和阳光的照射。

裴欧喜爱独自旅行,在户外静谧的时光中观察、思考。当他在学校假期返回法国北部的家乡时,淡季的海滩是他最常去的地方。当我们望向地平线,你越靠近它,它就离你越远,这种奇特的感觉有时甚至会将你吞噬,但裴欧在面对大自然变幻莫测的变化时却保持着不同寻常的平静。裴欧以精确的线条和布局的张力表达了色彩和质感在光、风、水、沙之间的无限变化。

When I walked full days in these zoos, I was to a certain extent trapped, like the animals I shot. After a while, I had to explore 100 percent natural and “no limits” places, to feel the wind, the rain, the sun on my skin, things like that.

Pillot prefers solitude and enjoys observing and thinking peacefully in the open air. When he returns to his hometown in northern France during school holidays, the beaches in the off-season are the places he visits most often. When we look at the horizon, the closer you get to it, the further away it gets, an overwhelming feeling that can even swallow you up, but Pillot maintains an unusual calm in the face of nature's fickle changes. 


The extreme precision of Eric Pillot’s photographs and the intense power of the composition produce infinite variations of hues and textures formed by the light, wind, water, and sand.

To Pillot, these pictures represent time, the course of nature, and freedom. The monochromatic photographs have shown us the movement of light and shadow, highlighting the binary world divided by the "horizon" - black and white, moment and eternity, movement and stillness. Each photograph in the "Horizon" series seems to have the potential of becoming its own negative, just like black and white, mutually attractive and interchangeable, while the image of the landscape appears to be abstract.


As any traveler knows, staring at the horizon forces one to confront oneself. It is this search for presence that illuminates these landscapes.

 In Situ USA, a New Journey Begins 



2014年,《此处》荣获由法兰西学会-法兰西艺术院(Académie des Beaux Arts of Institut de France)颁发的"Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière"摄影大奖,由此获得的大赛奖金也为裴欧开启了《此处-美国》的创作新旅程。

2015年,随着作品集《此处 II》的出版,已经获得法国两个重要摄影奖项认可的裴欧迎来了一系列重要个展,包括:巴黎法兰西学会-法兰西艺术院(2015),巴黎爱马仕空间(2016),法国桑斯橘园美术馆(2017),以及巴黎瑰丽酒店个人项目(2018)等。与此同时,裴欧的作品也被纳入许多重要的机构和个人收藏。

In 2014, "In Situ" won the "Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière" photography prize awarded by the Académie Française - Académie des Beaux-Arts, the prize money received from the competition also enabled Pillot to start a new journey for the creation of "In Situ USA".


Following the publishing of "In Situ II", Pillot, who has already been recognized by two major French photography awards, has welcomed a series of important solo exhibitions, including the Académie Française - Académie des Beaux-Arts, Paris (2015), Espace Hermès, Paris (2016), Musée d'Orangerie, Sens, France (2017), and Off-the-Wall project at Hôtel Crillon, Paris (2018), among others. At the same time, Pillot's works have been included in many important institutional and personal collections.

Although the works in "In Situ" and "In Situ USA" were taken by Pillot in the zoo, there is no direct connection between the photos and the zoos. Obviously, the animals are the protagonists of the series, and we can feel the artist's sympathy for them in these works and the resulting concern for nature, but these are not, in fact, Pillot's intentions in creating the series; behind this unique poetry and lament, Pillot suggests that


We, the humans, are living in concrete jungles, as lost as these animals in front of us.

即使身处城市的丛林,裴欧也找到了新的灵感,他把视线转向了伫立的墙垣——它们极少受到关注,却总是牵引着我们的步伐,成就我们眼前的风景。裴欧镜头下的隔墙脱离了自身所在的场景,以独立个体的姿态邀请观众重新审视它们的存在。


裴欧用自己融合了建筑、图像和诗学,同时游离于绘画边缘的摄影手法,进一步探索人与风景和空间之间的关联。

Interestingly, the jungle of cities does not stop Pillot from finding new inspirations. He lays his eyes on the erected walls that accompany our footsteps and shape our landscapes, but to which we pay little or no attention. Under Pillot’s lens, each wall has been detached from its environment, inviting the viewer to re-examine their existence as independent subjects.

The artist further explores the connection between people, landscape, and space through his architectural, pictorial, and poetic approach.

时间的概念也在埃里克·裴欧的作品中有所体现。如果说“地平线”中的时间是悬浮于空气和水之间的“一眼万年”,那“隔墙”里的时间则是镶嵌在残垣断壁中的“流年光影”—— 局部剥脱的墙体、褪色的墙面,墙根缝隙中露出的植物,大自然也活跃在这道时间的风景里。

同时,作品中人的缺席赋予了观众自由而完整的诠释空间。每个观众都可以以裴欧的视角感受“地平线”中天空与陆地或海洋相交的每个瞬间,或者想象“隔墙”中那些色彩、裂缝、污迹所经历的蹉跎岁月以及在墙的另一侧可能发生的故事。

The concept of time is reflected in Eric Pillot's works. If the time in “Horizon” is a glance of a million years suspended between air and water, the time in “Parois” is the passage of time embedded in the ruined walls — the partially peeling surface, the faded paints, the plants grow in the cracks of the walls, as nature is also active in this landscape of the time.


Humans are absent from the frame, but their very absence gives the viewer complete freedom of interpretation. Each viewer can experience every moment when the sky meets the land or the sea in the "Horizons" series from Pillot's perspective, as well as imagine the stories behind all the paints, cracks or stains, and on the other side of the wall in "Parois".

 如诗如画的纯粹摄影 

 Straight Photography, Poetic and Pictorial 



很多人看我作品的时候会怀疑他们看到的是摄影还是绘画。事实上,我的作品是“纯粹摄影” —— 也就是说它是在没有任何技术处理或后期修饰的情况下创造出来的。

受纯粹摄影(Straight Photography)的影响,裴欧的摄影均采用正面拍摄,有着清晰、无“漏光”、无变形的特点,与1917年摄影师保罗·斯特兰德 (Paul Strand) 发表的 “摄影”宣言相呼应:照片的影像要真实清晰,影调要丰富而层次分明,而这些效果是在“没有任何过程或操纵技巧的情况下,使用纯粹摄影的方式实现的”[1]

Many people may wonder if they are looking at a painting when they first see my work. In fact, my work is 'straight photography' - which means it is produced without any technical retouching or manipulations.

Fruit of Straight Photography, Pillot's works uses the principle of a frontal, sharp, leak-free, transformation-free shot, which concurs with Paul Strand’s manifesto article "Photography and the New God"(1917): “the most perfect realization of [this absolute objectivity that is the hallmark of photography] is accomplished without tricks of process or manipulation through the use of straight photographic methods.”[1]

那么这种“绘画般的质感”又是如何实现的呢?一方面,裴欧的作品调和了平面和空间的深度。在毫无布景和修饰的情况下,他选择放弃透视,利用直观正面的取景方式将墙面和地面组成的空间扁平化。这种构图使观者的视线停留在这个空间继而产生走进画面的错觉。


另一方面,裴欧擅于运用景象的色彩和质感,借助细腻的印刷,让图像色调时而明亮而利落,时而苍白而空灵。他像摆弄颜料一样对这些元素加以运用,所呈现的风景游离于形象与抽象的边界,使观众迷失于写实与抽象、绘画与摄影之中。

So how is this "pictoriality" achieved? On one hand, Pillot’s work also reconciles the depth of plane and space. Without setting or decoration, he discards perspective and flattens the space composed of walls and grounds through an intuitive frontal view. This composition thus allows the viewer to focus on this space and truly enter the image.

On the other hand, Pillot excels at using the colors and textures of the scenery. With the help of delicate printing, Pillot's images are sometimes bright and crisp, sometimes pale and ethereal. He manipulates these wall elements like paint, presenting landscapes that stray from the border between figuration and abstraction, leaving the viewer lost between realism and abstraction, painting and photography.

回看裴欧这一路走来,在三十而立的年纪发现摄影,不惜放弃原本成功安定的人生轨迹,开启新篇章。在这看似“任性”的决定背后是他对思想自由、探索内心和表达自我的深切渴望,而摄影让实现这一切成为可能,它为裴欧提供了一种探索和看待生活的新方式,以及从内心出发、伴随着各种邂逅的旅行。


目前,裴欧正在创作一个全新的系列,同时积极为自己进行中的3个系列《此处》,《地平线》和《隔墙》做新的规划。他希望在不久的将来,能够来到亚洲,在中国、印度、日本等国创作《此处-亚洲》,并且以中国作为这个系列的开篇。在摄影道路上已经坚持了二十年的裴欧坚信未来还有更多可能。

Looking back at Pillot's journey, he discovered photography at the age of thirty and abandoned his originally successful and stable life to open a new chapter. Behind this seemingly "capricious" decision is his deep desire for intellectual freedom and self-exploration. And photography makes all these possible, providing Pillot with a new way to explore and look at life, a way to travel inwardly, and through encounters.


At the moment, Pillot is working on a brand new series and actively planning new chapters for his three ongoing series "In Situ", "Horizon" and "Parois". He hopes to come to Asia in the near future and create "In Situ - Asia" in China, India, Japan, etc., and start the series with China. Pillot, who has been persisting in photography for twenty years, is convinced that there are more possibilities in his future.
