Responding to the Shanghai Biennale’s theme “Bodies of Water,” “Inter-Sensorial,” presents recent work by students and faculty of the College of Design & Innovation at Tongji University.
Consisting of 18 projects, ranging from objects and videos to interactive installations, the exhibition will explore the liminal thresholds between bodies, perception, and virtual and physical space through an examination of individual, inter-personal and inter-species multivocalities. Through research, speculation and critical reflection, these works question anthropocentric assumptions about subjectivity by recalibrating sensorial perceptions and their sites of agency. As such, the relationships and directionalities between stimuli and sensation, subject and object, and real and perceived are destabilized to reveal alternative modes of seeing, experiencing and being.

Interactive Installation
Feel the tide, see the magnetic field.
Human beings are losing their biological instincts, gradually becoming more distant from the sea and land. “New Instinct” focuses on reconnecting the human body with nature in the contemporary urban context. One of the wearable devices simulates oysters’ ability to sense tidal cycles through atmospheric pressure, while the other mimics the ability of birds to see the Earth’s geomagnetic field through photosensitive proteins in their eyes. These biological signals are transformed into sensations detectable by the human wearer, thus cultivating new "instincts" through technology.

Interactive Installation
This interactive installation creates an immersive space that communicates our real-time emotional state, contributing to self-awareness and reflection. Patterns are constructed by moving particles representing emotional fluctuations derived from the viewer’s facial expressions. This helps them visualize and understand their current emotions, which can contribute to psychological recovery. In 2020, the installation was mounted in Wuhan with the aim of aiding people who were psychologically affected by the coronavirus epidemic.

Seating Object
Made almost completely from IKEA product parts, this chair works as a mechanical sensor, helping us connect our physical posture to the notion of time. Using a system of cranks, sliders and magnets, the vertical force generated while sitting is transformed into rotation, thus spinning an hourglass attached to a turntable. The flow of sand indicates how long one has been seated in the same position, helping create more awareness of one’s sitting habits.

Underwater Forest
Francesca Valsecchi
2017-2020
Photographs, analog mixed printing techniques
The forest - like the planet, and our bodies - is mainly composed of water. Yet this fact is not readily seen. We think of the forest as green, but could we observe its “blueness”? These images explore this aspect of nature, invisible and neglected by our anthropocentric view. “Underwater Forest” features analog and digital photographs, manipulated in scale and hand-printed using water in a darkroom or as cyanoprints. Through this process, the images reveal the hidden movement and fluidity within plants to help us rediscover the element that sustains all life.
