"Body is just flesh that covers the soul"
Time, HU Zi胡子, 2008.
We are honoured to announce that HU Zi's work will be presented in the first BFC Art Festival at DonGallery’s space from April 2 to April 8.
In this exhibition, DonGallery selected, a video piece, Role and seven sets of manuscripts which were made by HU Zi in 2008. The works' figures have helped her access the corporeal self, the psychological self, the social self and articulate its philosophical implications— implications that have untapped relevance for the political challenges facing the world today.
From earlier gauche to both gauche and oil painting till now, “HU Zi’s lines are highly discriminating —angular, and straight forward. The jagged-edged outlines of her subjects’ physical features reinforce the dark sides of their personalities, power and time”, Andy Cohen.
Disc's dick, HU Zi胡子, 2008. Gouache on paper 纸上水粉, 32.5 × 44 cm ×2
In HU Zi's works, a person's entirety is collapsing into an abstract image that contains a posture, a movement, and accessories, etc. In the group of works revolving around the body, all of this identity fades away, and we are left with something more primal, less sanitized, more felt and less remembered or fantasized.
HU Zi examines her and other individuals' behaviours, states, and social connections through her works. HU Zi wants to know her community in another way. She takes pride in capturing a person's meaning, pulling details from their life and work into their postures. She raises questions in every work: what is the relationship between self and the group, what is the meaning of being a human, and what does it means to be this person or that?

Every figure, every angle, every gesture that Hu Zi chooses to capture or produce contributes, in its way, to this overarching project, a framework that becomes known to the artist only slowly and over time. In her writing, she lays out a handful of the allusions and suggestions that appear to her when the work is laid out in front of her at home, perched on the backs of sofas, on dining tables, against walls.
Hu Zi finds purpose for art in “peeling away the most honest layers of desire and cruelty in order to face the self.” Finding the self requires the ability to read—to know—another person.

Hu Zi (b. 1981) graduated from The Department of Comprehensive Painting at China Academy of Art with M.F.A. (2007), once stayed in Cité internationale des arts Paris for residency during her exchange student at École des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2006) and was selected for Glenfiddich Artist in Residence Programme in Scotland (2014), Swiss Arts Council Artist in Residence in Switzerland (2019), currently living and working in Shanghai. She works most often in gouache, but also in oil paint, both invested with translucency. In her long-term practice of making portraits, she collates individual experiences for the construction of a self-image by fabricating the very unique touch of body boundaries, also brings together her understanding of exotic culture and her misaligned gaze on the opposite sex. The subjects addressed include rock gods, literary giants, great artists and those who have or had an impact on her. Hu Zi’s solo exhibitions include “Dark Side” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2020), “Stone Flesh” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2018), “Mozart” (Studio D’Arte Raffaelli, Trento, Italy, 2017), “Lover” (Fab Union, Shanghai, 2016), “Flesh” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2014), “Kids” (Don Gallery, Shanghai, 2014), etc. She was also featured in “Infantization” organized by Shanghai Art Museum (2007), later toured to Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon, France and Basel Dreispitzhalle, Switzerland (2010).
