“Spring sleep misses dawn”
Introducing our latest group exhibitions project, “Spring sleep misses dawn”, an artist lead fixture to take place each year come Spring; a given year’s theme being formulated upon gathering together the participating artists to present an exhibition in the Inna Art Space, the conclusion to the springtime gathering. Late Spring in this city, decked in luxuriance, the people too lost in revery, humidity and stagnation shrouding the artist’s nerves, works some of which simply must be made, some things that must be said. Sometimes, having awakened, there’s nothing other to do than drift back, unregulated, into slumber, a place where who knows how many blossoms fall…..Taking HAPPY HOUR as its theme and title, this year’s “Spring sleep misses dawn” has been initiated by Chen Dongfan and Liu Beining with 22 artists participating in the exhibition itself.Happy Hour refers in its literal sense to the slower junctures in a bar’s hours of business, times when relatively low rates work to “Spread cheer” among the clientele; here however we take the term as a means to denote “liminal” states in time.HAPPY HOUR might be the time ones working day is over but home life has still yet to recommence, a time sovereign to oneself, a glee to be relished solely, unadulteratedly as ones own. HAPPY HOUR could be the time when although already awakened, nothing presses one to leave the bed, a time any sense of objective or purpose is suspended wherein there exists a kind of jouissance rebellious to modernity’s usury of human subjects.A “Happy Hour” might be a situation where one has a plan of action to make a large scale work but has yet to put this into practice, a time separating mind from hand, amid sketches and drafts, enjoyment in thinking, scrawling levity, a time wherein there lies the true secret of art. A “Happy Hour” of course could also be found in a real happy hour, a tipsy juncture not necessarily requiring all that many sales. Alcohol, unfortunately, exerts a repressive influence on the central nervous system, impeding precisely those nerve clusters that would normally regulate control, the function of the cerebral cortex thus entering into an incorrigible hyper-functional state. As “representation”, might art not also be capable of becoming so, as it flows through the realms of “representation”, inciting two negative figures to produce one positive. Just such a modus operandi might be found in the painstakingly rendered structures of a large-scale piece, just as it its momentary encounter might also be made within the “economical” forms of a “Happy Hour”.(translated by Alastair McInnes)
