At this “Time of Asia”, China and Israel, situated on two opposite ends of the same continent, have contributed to the global cultural cooperation. On many levels, artists have played a crucial role in inviting artistic perspectives on contemporary issues. Through photography and video, the artists challenge the limits of the media, combine traditional moral values with contemporary nuances, engage with historical women figures, interact with objects of idolatry at this epoch of vast consumerism, and etc. The exhibits unpack many actions and strategies the artists apply in psychological, social, cultural, and economic spheres, but, first and foremost, on a humane level. Great inspirations are presented in their strong urge to seek the agency and empowerment of women ourselves.
This webinar is organized by the Shanghai Himalayas Museum and the Liberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies of the University of Michigan to support the artists. The artists will give their interpretations of making these compelling artworks. The co-curators Shoshan Brosh-Levitt and Fang Zhang will moderate the conversations between artists and also invite audiences to propose questions to the participating artists. We hope through this webinar, deeper comprehension is achieved through hearing in person the voices of the artists, discussing shared inspirations from challenges of life and career, appreciating their combats against frustrations with traditions, inter-generational love, unraveling expectations from womanhood, seeking identity and agency, which are thematically illustrated at different layers of "Impersonating myself / Becoming myself".
