跟布朗的渊源印象中是他做玉平的展览,那时候也没有画廊的概念。记得是在国贸的一个楼道里。他的展览应该是画的一些小瓶子,楼道非常窄,也不是非常长。好像人在楼道当中要挤来挤去。印象里,只是觉着开幕就是一个大party,有喝的,有吃的很开心,这恐怕是最早关于画廊的记忆吧。
第一次去角楼是看师姐孔海燕的展览,一个老外,腼腆地、略带羞涩的看着出出进进的人,有时会坐在墙角里,注视着展厅,虽然是一副生面孔,可从他的神情里仿佛看到一个皇城根下长大的孩子,与角楼有着难以割舍的关系。我和玉平分别在那做过展览,他那几年跟布朗合作过的展览有很多,记得鱼卖的不错。开幕的晚上,布朗很开心,笑着拥抱着大家,蹩脚的中文说的最多的话就是"干杯"。
我的个展恐怕是他做过的最郁闷的事情了吧,展览前因为画的内容有关部门检查通不过,他多方协调解释,总算可以挂出来了。开幕后一张没卖,让他白忙活,自己到没什么,觉得布朗和工作人员白忙活,心里多少有些不安。
那几年因为看展览没少去角楼,一是朋友开幕凑个热闹,二是喜欢去角楼,爬上斜坡的台阶就能看到北京车站,火车经过这里进站。八一年来北京上学,每年都要经过这几次。站在角楼上俯瞰北京,很舒服,说不清道不明的温暖,每次看完展览,都喜欢在城墙上四处溜达,多转悠一会儿。
转眼三十年过去,红门画廊依然在那,角楼依然在那,布朗像个老朋友依然在那,人生总有太多选择,而布朗用三十年的光阴见证了自己的选择,也见证了中国当代艺术星火燎原的过程。
他热爱艺术,爱这里的人和文化,他平静的平常的日复一日做着自己喜欢的事,真诚的祝福他,谢谢他带给我们那么多美好的回忆。
谢谢!愿我们共有的一切分享都是生命中的精彩,都是最珍贵的财富,都是灵魂深处的碰撞。

My introduction to Brian was at the opening of Yuping’s Small Bottles exhibition on the mezzanine level of the China World Hotel. It was narrow and not very long and people had to push to get by. In those days the public really didn't know what a gallery was, but my earliest impression was of an opening which was a big party with good food and drinks!
The first time I went to the Dong Bian Men was to the exhibition of Kong Haiyan. I saw a foreigner looking at the people passing by with a shy expression. Sometimes he would sit in the corner looking down the hall. Although he is a fresh face, he seems to be a child growing up in the imperial capital and had an inseparable relationship with the watchtower. Wang Yuping worked with Brian on a lot of exhibitions in those years. I remember the “Fish” series was the best seller. On the night of the opening, Brian hugged everyone happily. The most he said in his unskilled Chinese was Gan Bei.
I'm afraid my solo exhibition is the most depressing thing he has ever done. Some of the paintings failed to pass the examination by the tower management. He coordinated with many parties, and finally the show went ahead. After the opening ceremony, his efforts were in vain because none of the paintings sold. I didn't feel very sad, but Brian and his staff felt a little uneasy.
In those years I liked to climb the steps of the tower where I can see Beijing Railway Station with the trains passing by. When I came to Beijing for campus life in 1981, I passed here several times a year. Standing on the watchtower overlooking Beijing makes me feel very comfortable and warm. Every time I visited an exhibition, I liked to walk around on the wall for a while.
Thirty years later, Red Gate Gallery is still here, and so is the watchtower. Brian is still like an old friend. There are always too many choices in life, but Brian made his own choice 30 years ago. He also witnessed Chinese contemporary art starting like a prairie fire. He loves art, people and culture. He does what he likes calmly, day after day. I sincerely bless him! Thank him for bringing us so many wonderful memories.
May all the memories we share be the wonderful part of life, the most precious wealth, and be part of our soul.

The Pink Bed exhibition in 2003 certainly was one of high drama, even before the opening! In our innocence, I thought we were presenting a frank and honest account of Shen Ling’s private life, but to the conscientious comrades of the Bureau of Cultural Relics it must have been full-on porn. I remember one cadre walking around the graphic depictions of a husband and wife’s daily routine shaking her head and saying to me: Oh Bulang, Oh Bulang, it’s too much! Then the negotiations began - starting with a no show and an artist in tears, to pulling a few works that were not going to be shown in a Ming Dynasty tower! Somehow I managed all this in my unskilled Chinese.
When I think about Shen Ling and Wang Yuping, it is with fond memories of the exhibitions and visits to their home and studio on the southern outskirts of Beijing - bright, sunny, cheery, Bohemian and hippie! That is Shen Ling! Gan Bei!
2003年的“粉床”展览太戏剧化了!就在开幕前,我天真的以为我们的展览是对申玲私人生活的开诚布公,但是在文化局同志审慎严苛的标准里,这简直是“色情”。我记得一位干部同志,走到一副描绘了夫妻日常生活的画前,摇着头说:“啊……布朗呀,啊……布朗呀,这太过分了!”然后就是谈判呗——开始是因为不能展览,艺术家伤心的哭泣,到后来只去掉一小部分作品不能在身为明朝文物的角楼里展览。我居然用蹩脚的中文处理了这一切。
一想起申玲和王玉平两口子,满脑子都是那些展览还有到他们在北京南城外的家和工作室做客——明亮、阳光、俏皮、既波西米亚又嬉皮!这才是申玲呀!干杯吧!
