Joan Jonas

Born 1936 in NewYork, USA | Lives and works in New York and Nova Scotia, Canada

Joan Jonas is an American visual artist and a pioneer of video and performance art, and one of the most important artists to emerge in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Jonas' projects and experiments were influential in the creation of video performance art as a medium. Her influences also extended to conceptual art, theatre, performance art and other visual media. In 1958 she received a bachelor's degree in Art History from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She later studied sculpture and drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and received an MFA in Sculpture from Columbia University in 1965.  She has participated in exhibitions in The New Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Tate Modern, London. She was the sixth female artist to represent the United States at Venice since 1990.

Senga Nengudi

Born 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, USA | Lives and works in New York and Los Angeles

Senga Nengudi is an African American visual artist best known for her abstract sculptures that combine found objects and choreographed performances. She is part of a group of African American avant-garde artists working in New York and Los Angeles from the 1960s onward. She was a member of the Studio Z collective, also known as the LA Rebellion, that comprised African American artists "distinguished by their experimental and improvisational practice." Complicating cultural, ethnic and racial classification became as central to Nengudi's work as her handling of gender constraints. She often combines African, Asian and Native American art forms in particular for her performance pieces and staged photographs. While her oeuvre highlights issues surrounding gender, race and ethnicity, Nengudi's work focuses on the ways in which everyone is negatively affected by these systematic forces and her pieces attempt to foster cross-cultural inspiration for men and women alike. Nengudi's work can be found in the museum collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY, and Brooklyn Museum, NY.

Olu Ogunnaike

Born 1986 in London, United Kingdom | Lives and works in London

Olu Ogunnaike is an artist whose practice sits between experiments in sculpture, drawing, performance, and installation. His practice centers around his use of materials, in particular wood, which he directly correlates with identity, both personal and communal. His interest lies in the investigation of the rituals and events that inform our sense of individual and collective self-becoming. Ogunnaike uses nature, and more specifically trees, as a motif of the onlookers of the community in which they grow and occupy; exploring their potential for reflecting systems present in the intimate and public realms we inhabit. Interested in our composite identities, his explorations in the changing states of the materiality of wood look to point to the residues of potential narratives, narratives that become ingrained into a resource inextricably linked to our historical development. What can happen when a tree is uprooted from one geographical setting and turned into an object in another. The artist's works can be found among the collections of Tate Modern, Royal Academy of Arts and Cob Gallery.

Niclas Riepshoff

Born 1992 in Bremen, Germany | Lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg

Niclas Riepshoff graduated from Fine Art studies (MA) at the HFBK in Hamburg. Riepshoff also studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and the California Institute of the Arts. Niclas Riepshoff uses a wide range of material and media, from ceramics and computing-platforms to paper mâché and drawings, to form his sculptural protagonists that sometimes emit light, sound, or heat. By shifting gears with each project and his signature mocking styles, Riepshoff's practice playfully questions the notion of the "Self" as an authentic agent of artistic production. Interweaving site-specific research, personal stories, and references to art historical movements, his works are centered around those topics that biopolitics is most concerned with: reproduction, infanthood, and age. Besides his individual practice, he works together with Tanja Nis-Hansen under the collaborative performance project "CONNY." Riepshoff currently has a solo exhibition at Stadium, Berlin.
