This year marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of Red Gate Gallery, the oldest art gallery in China. The first time I saw Brian was at the Shanghai Art Fair held in ShangMart Mall in 2000. Although I didn't approach him, I knew of Brian and his Red Gate Gallery. At the beginning of 2005, I saw the application information of Red Gate residency program on the website of Art Alliance, so I sorted out the application material and mailed it to off. Soon, I received a call from Brian asking me to participate in Beijing for two months.

Red Gate Residency Open Studio, 2005
In early June, after settling down in the studio of Red Gate in Feijiacun village, Brian gave me 3000 yuan. He told me to do whatever I want to do. The most important thing is to look around. I followed Brian's advice and used the art map prepared for Red Gate studio residents. In addition to visiting some artists' studios in Feijiacun Village, I would also ride the studio bicycle to Suojiacun Village Art District and 798 Art District. After two weeks, I knew how to get around!

During this period, on a bus passing through Xinhuamen, I suddenly saw that the whole building was wrapped in a protective green safety webbing. This electrified me and I thought of making it into an artwork. The next day I went to Xinhuamen to photograph it, but the police stopped me. The other problem was the huge number of cars passing by on Chang’an St. It was hard to get a clean shot. However, I found that when the traffic lights turned red there was a chance. I positioned myself directly opposite the middle of Xinhuamen. It took me about a second or two to control the angle of the camera head, press the shutter, but I got it, and then took off without any trouble. That was the beginning of my safety webbing series.

Zhou Jun works at UQ Art Museum
I came back to Beijing after the Spring Festival in 2006 and as a Red Gate artist, I held two solos in 2007 and 2010. With the help of Red Gate, I have been invited to hold many other solo and group exhibitions, and participated in art fairs in London, Paris, Australia, Hong Kong and other places.

Over the past 30 years, Red Gate Gallery has cooperated with countless artists and held numerous exhibitions. As a gallery artist, I am one of many, but like the others we have all shared in the gallery’s history.

Zhou Jun’s photography has documented the tremendous pace of change of China’s urban landscapes. He adapts his large format black and white photographs of historical buildings being restored or new skyscrapers under construction by changing the color of the ubiquitous green safety webbing to red. The clash of the red against the black and white photo is striking and reinforces the challenging impact of China’s mad rush to modernization over the past 20 years. More recently, he has explored China’s history creating cracked ‘Ming’ urns in blue and white porcelain, splashed with the color red and protected by authentic looking scaffolding but actually made from delicate porcelain.
