一個好的畫廊是城市文化記憶的一部分，是藝術家們創造力的舞臺。

與老友布朗的交往還是在沒有圓明園藝術村前的友誼賓館開始的，80年代作为第一批改革开放到來的外國专家，他几十年來支持、推動中國当代艺术先鋒精神，是最早让世界了解現代中国社會的澳大利亞人，他通過藝術家的藝術創造，向世人展示作品和他們對現實與未來的期待！

回望曾經，布朗他的红门画廊與中国当代艺术家共同寫下這段最初的先鋒藝術史。

A good gallery is a part of the cultural memory of the city being the stage for the creativity of artists.

We met Brian at the Friendship Hotel near the Old Summer Palace Art Village. As one of the early foreign experts who came during the ‘reform and opening up’ in the 1980s, he has supported and promoted the pioneering spirit of contemporary Chinese art for decades, and we got to know an Australian in contemporary Chinese society.

Together we wrote the initial history of the avant-garde art.

曾经有许多红门艺术家的画作填满了我们在澳大利亚驻华使馆公寓的墙，现在又都挂在我们澳大利亚家中的墙壁上。在我的脑海里，这些画永远和90年代的北京联系在一起——这是一个令人兴奋、难忘的新艺术、音乐和舞蹈时代。冒险、激进、令人兴奋的时代，布朗则是其中的先锋——他是一位开拓者，他在支持中国艺术家、策划和推广中国当代艺术方面发挥了关键作用。作为一名真正的文化大使，我们也从布朗促成的许多文化交流中获益匪浅；早年间我们建立了中澳艺术家和画廊主之间的联系，后来又扩展到来自世界各地的艺术家。翻阅这面记忆墙，我们看到了通过布朗和红门画廊认识的老朋友们的照片。祝贺你取得了一项了不起的成就。

Congratulations on your 30th anniversary!

Paintings from many Red Gate artists filled the walls of our apartment at the Australian Embassy and now hang on the walls at our home in Australia. These paintings are forever linked in my mind with Beijing of the 1990s - a heady, unforgettable time for new art, music and dance. It was risky, radical, exciting and Brian was in the vanguard - a trailblazer who has played a critical role in his support of Chinese artists, and in the curating and promotion of contemporary Chinese art to new audiences. A true cultural ambassador, we also gained immeasurably from the many cultural exchanges that Brian has facilitated,forging links between Chinese and Australian artists and gallery owners in the early years, and later expanding to include artists from all over the world. Scrolling through this memory wall, we've seen photos of old friends who we met through Brian and Red Gate. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement.

Thank you for letting me know that Yang Gang had passed away.

I wouldn't have known otherwise. We couldn't speak any of each other's language and communicated through drawings and signs. Nevertheless I felt some commonality with him and his work.

希望所有这些限制最终解除后，我们能很快于北京再见面。

顺便说一下，李超现在就读于柏林美术大学（世界上最好的艺术大学之一，他以优异成绩被录取）。

去年十月，我在柏林展出了他的作品。6月底，他还将在佛罗伦萨的一家画廊展出一件特别的装置。（还记得吗，他有一件作品被卢浮宫卡鲁索购物中心选中）

他是一名高手，需要被牢记和关注，因为他的价值将不断增长。

I hope that we will soon have a chance to meet again in Beijing, after all those restrictions have been lifted finally.

By the way, LI CHAO now is in Berlin at UdK (University of Fine Arts, Berlin; one of the best art-Universities in the world, who accepted him summa-cum-laude).

Last year in October I exhibited him in Berlin. And now end of June he will be exhibiting a special installation in a gallery in Florence.

(You remember, one of his artworks had been chosen by the Louvre Carrousel.)

He is a highflyer and needs to be kept in mind and watched, as his value will be growing.

曾经学生时代经常去红门，那是能嗅到国际气息的地方，还是在中国的“高墙破瓦”地界儿，也曾经羡慕能去红门组织的驻留项目的人，可以身临其境浸泡在自由气息之中。角门上的红门是多少艺术家成长路上的“塔门” 抬头就可以仰望艺术星空，幸运的话还可以找到自己的那刻星。
