No Airing of Memories
—On the Persistence of Performance Art

Ah Chang was raised on the desires of humankind. He is famed for his performance art, and remains unmoved by fortune and fame. He uses jade as his material, and serves as a touchstone for the human heart. He's ever the trickster, and when he laughs, he reveals yellow teeth only seen among the lower rungs of society. Those lower rungs of society are a symbol of the aristocracy of vitality—there is no need to be on constant alert about whether to take offense at how people see his appearance, because he has a mirror-like allure. His eyes are a bit hazy and dim, as if he has seen too much of the world, but also show sophistication and contentment. There is a brilliance unique to their generation, having absorbed that spiritual energy of the Chinese people concealed before the reform era, and fostered by the yellow soil, it bloomed in every field, sprouting branches and leaves, and giving rise to the great national flourishing we see today. History had left a scorching mark of chaos on them, and art history has mostly followed the narrative of destiny, recording the brilliance of this generation, absorbing all in their path, releasing not the least bit of waste. Among the many cultural fields, performance art seems harmless; only the places they go are utterly, ruthlessly devastated, integrating the individual body and will to the utmost extreme. After all, there are few things actually worth doing for Ah Chang.Ah Chang is rational because his performance art is the outcome of reason. He is also sensational; in the titles of these artworks, we can sense literary and historical allusions. After an act of obeisance to words, they are unfettered by theory. In this exhibition, he uses words to guide the viewer. Jade heeds the footsteps of reality.Countless sails have passed over the horizon. Performance persists.
