Hua International is pleased to announce “Notations from Somewhere,” Rafael Domenech’s first solo show in Berlin. For this exhibition, the Cuban-born, NY-based artist has created two parallel projects around Potsdamer Straße that highlight Domenech’s distinctive approach to exhibition-making. Rafael Domenech is at the forefront of a new generation of artists that are redefining the exhibition experience. Domenech’s conceptual practice ranges from small artist’s books to large-scale architectural constructions that often work in tandem with one another. In “Notations from Somewhere,”the exhibition takes the form of an experimental publication that constructs and deconstructs the complex book- architecture-city interrelations. For Domenech, exhibition-making is much like publishing: the editorial decisions aim to develop a sequence of moments that create a context for an aesthetic experience. The works in the exhibition integrate the convulsive dynamism of the city and thus heighten our awareness of architecture and the urban landscape outside of the gallery space.

Rafael Domenech

拉斐尔·多梅内克（Rafael Domenech）是一位居住在纽约的跨学科艺术家(生于古巴，1989年)。站在新一代艺术家的最前沿， 多梅内克重新定义展览体验。他探索建筑、城市设计与当代材料生产的概念，开发生产不同类型的物体 和空间:如实验性出版物、展馆、装置与公共项目。多梅内克的建筑干预与出版方式相联通，如切割、编辑、修改和流通，并以此作为研究策略，扩大了他对展览模式的关注。展览作为一个积极的生产机器，而不仅仅是一个存储容器。他目前正在迈阿密的巴斯美术馆参加合作展览。

Rafael Domenech is an interdisciplinary artist living in New York (b. Cuba, 1989). Domenech is at the forefront of a new generation of artists that is redefining the exhibition experience. He explores notions of architecture, urban design, and contemporary material productions to develop and produce different typologies of objects and spaces, such as experimental publications, pavilions, installations, and public programs. Domenech’s architectural interventions intersect publishing methodologies such as cutting, redacting, revising, and circulation as research tactics to amplify his interest in the exhibition model as an active machine for production rather than a repository space. He is currently in a collaborative show at the Bass Museum in Miami. His work has been exhibited at SculptureCenter; Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City; The Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York; The Bass Museum, Miami Beach; Phillip and Patricia Frost Art Museum, Miami; Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; Artium Museum, Vitoria, Spain; Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami; and Hua International Gallery, Berlin, and Beijing. He was the recipient of an award from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and the CintasFellowship. He holds an MFA from Columbia University.

Hua International is a contemporary art gallery based in Berlin and Beijing. Driven by a cosmopolitan and collaborative ethos, Hua International is a new global gallery for a fast-changing global art market. Founded by Hua in 2018, the gallery champions a cosmopolitan program across its two spaces, featuring emerging and established international artists with a special emphasis on cross-disciplinary, performative, and socially-engaged art. 

 

The gallery has positioned itself at the epicenter of two vibrant art districts. In Berlin, it is located in a historic, pre-war building situated in Potsdamer Strasse; in Beijing, the gallery relocated to the acclaimed 798 Arts District in August 2020. Hua International also hosts curatorial projects and artistic collaborations in order to pursue new avenues of production, discourse and promotion of contemporary art. In a time of tectonic shifts in the art world, flexibility, experimentation and collaboration are key components of the gallery’s model in promoting works of art that are unique and new to the market.
