马凌画廊荣幸宣布何子彦的作品《名字》（2015）和《无名》（2015）进入新加坡美术馆收藏。

《名字》是一件单频录像投影作品，展出时与根茨·Z·汉拉恩所编写的多本书籍一并呈现。何子彦从2014年开始收集这些书籍，其中大部分都是绝版孤本。根茨·Z·汉拉恩是第一位试图为马来西亚共产党进行全面历史记述的作家，同时，他在其他领域的著作也颇为丰富，曾发表过历史及文学作品。《名字》挪用了大量西方电影里演员写作的镜头，影片的口述文本节选自汉拉恩撰写的多本著作，由美国专业配音演员朗读，使得汉拉恩的人物形像变得更加鲜活。

《无名》是根据一个历史人物改编的，他最广为人知的名字是“莱特”。“莱特”是1939年至1947年期间马来亚共产党秘书长的50个已知化名之一，而他的真名至今仍不为人所知。据说他于1947年在泰国被杀害。当时他是一名三重间谍，先后为法国和英国的秘密部队工作，在马来亚日据时期为日本宪兵队工作。这部无名者的传记记载了一个地区被多个世界大国和意识形态所争夺的整段历史。《无名》也是一部关于电影和表演的作品。这类角色中许多最令人难忘、最传神的表演都是由香港著名演员梁朝伟所演绎的。《无名》这部作品则是完全通过挪用梁朝伟24年演艺生涯里的各种电影片段构成。

We are delighted to share that Ho Tzu Nyen's works, The Name (2015) and The Nameless (2015) were recently acquired by Singapore Art Museum.

The Name is a single channel video projection, installed along with books edited or written by the author Gene Z. Hanrahan, many of them rare, out-of-print books that were collected by Ho Tzu Nyen since 2014. Gene Z. Hanrahan was the first writer who attempted to compose a comprehensive historical account of the Malaysian communist party, and also produced a wide variety of other writings, including “historical” as well as “literary” works. The Name is constructed out of footage appropriated from various Western films showing actors engaged in the act of writing. The spoken text that accompanies The Name consists of excerpts from various books “written” by Hanrahan, and are recited by professional American voice actors, who infuse Hanrahan’s character with life by reading excerpts of his writings.

The Nameless is based on a historical character most commonly known as Lai Teck, which was one of the 50 known aliases of the Secretary-General of the Malayan Communist Party from 1939 to 1947. His real name remains unknown today, and he was said to have been killed in Thailand in 1947, after being exposed as a triple agent, working first for the French then British secret forces, then with the Japanese Kempeitai during the years of the Malayan Occupation. And in the biography of this man without a name is written the entire history of a region fought over by multiple world powers and ideologies. But The Nameless is also a work about cinema, and acting. Many of the most memorable and powerful performances of such characters have been delivered by the great Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai, and The Nameless is constructed entirely through appropriated fragments of films featuring Tony Leung across 24 years of his career.

Ho Tzu Nyen has been widely exhibited with one person exhibitions at the Yamaguchi Centre for Arts and Media, Yamaguchi (2021), Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art, Oldenburg (2019), Kunstverein, Hamburg (2018), Ming Contemporary Art Museum, Shanghai (2018), TPAM, Yokohama (2018), Asia Art Archive (2017), Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (2015), Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2012) and Artspace, Sydney (2011), amongst others. He also represented Singapore at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011). Recent group exhibitions include 13th Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju (2021), Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, Busan (2019), Aichi Triennial 2019, Toyota City and Nagoya City (2019), Home Work 8, Beirut (2019), Sharjah Biennial 14, Sharjah (2019), Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju (2018), National Gallery Singapore, Singapore (2018), Dhaka Art Summit 2018, Dhaka (2018), Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2017), Guggenheim Museum, New York (2016), Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2016), Times Museum, Guangzhou (2013), and Witte de With, Rotterdam (2012). He has participated in numerous international film festivals including Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah (2012) and the 41st Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes International Film Festival in France (2009). He was an Artist-in-Residency at the DAAD (Berlin) from 2015 to 2016, and the Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong (2012 to 2015).
