胶囊上海｜Artissima艺博会｜展位Pink A #17

胶囊上海荣幸参加意大利最重要的艺博会之一Artissima。艺博会将于2021年11月4日至7日在都灵Lingotto Fiere区的OVAL举行。

胶囊上海将呈现新锐艺术家张丰渊（1993年生于中国上海，现工作生活于美国纽约）的个人项目《风的形状》，近期创作的手工编织棉布作品。

张丰渊的作品是思想与双手、抽象与具象相互交汇碰撞的结果。艺术家对材料的情绪反馈、长年运用织布机的丰富经验、娴熟的创作手法以及即兴的灵感得到了巧妙的平衡。作品中的风景是对自然能量的致敬。

张丰渊对代代相传的古老技艺的兴趣来源于她的外婆。在物质生活匮乏的年代，她的外婆将旧绒线衫拆开，利用这些旧材料为孩子们重新编织合身的新衣物。无论是纤维艺术或是陶瓷，她为隐藏在平凡材料中的无限可能所打动。张丰渊在使用织物创作作品时，不仅给予了观者丰富微妙的触觉和视觉体验，更是用针线将人类文化与自然重新编织在了一起。

这些织物作品中的风景并非是单纯的对自然的拟仿，而更像是一个不可思议的谜语，等待着有心人的解答。正如传统的中国山水画，张丰渊的作品从不直接描绘具体的地景，而是意图捕捉感受和气韵。同时，作品中人的缺席也在提醒着人们与自然重新建立联系，以一种广博的视角去看待艺术创作和生活。

Capsule Shanghai is pleased to participate in Artissima, Italy’s leading art fair, taking place from November 4 to November 7, 2021, at Turin OVAL, in the Lingotto Fiere district.   

On view is "The Shape of Wind", a solo project by young artist, Miranda Fengyuan Zhang (b. 1993, Shanghai, China; currently lives and works in New York, USA) focusing on her most recent body of work, made with handwoven cotton. 

The artistic practice of Miranda Fengyuan Zhang lies where abstraction and figuration intersect with intellectual and manual dimensions. Being the result of the balance between improvisation, the artist’s emotional response to the fabrics she selects, her technical expertise, and experienced use of a traditional weaving tool, the loom, the landscapes Miranda creates are visions that pay homage to the energy of nature.

Inspired by her grandmother, who in difficult times used to unravel old jumpers to knit new ones for her family, Miranda became fascinated by a wide variety of crafts inherited from our ancestors. From textile art to ceramics, she was moved by the potential hidden in humble materials. Miranda uses fabric, not just to create different tactile effects and nuances that please the eye; most importantly, she uses threads to try to mend the broken balance between man and nature, filling the gap between nature and culture. 

Unfolding before the viewers’ eyes are landscapes that transcend the limits of pure mimesis, becoming an enigma, waiting to be solved by the attentive gaze of the audience. Just like in the tradition of Chinese landscape painting, the landscapes of Miranda embody an atmosphere, a mood, and a feeling, rather than the depiction of a specific geography. Devoid of any human presence, these works remind us of the necessity for mankind to reunite with nature and embrace a holistic approach towards artistic creation, and life in general.

Miranda Fengyuan Zhang 张丰渊｜Spiral Up | 2021 | handwoven cotton 手工编织棉布 | 51 x 51 cm

Miranda Fengyuan Zhang (Shanghai, China, 1993, lives and works in New York City) embraces cultures and ties them together using wools from isolated farms in China. Inspired by her grandmother, who during difficult times, unraveled jumpers to knit new ones, mixing different colors and created strange shapes with unexpected colors. Miranda represents semi-abstract gardens, half figurative landscapes, full of look-alike animal silhouettes, rivers and colorful mountains celebrating the mythology of life and nature that translates and magnifies the gesture.

In Zhang's work, the material goes first, then comes the ideas. She follows the lead of her wool, giving its path mystical enlightenment. Every piece is knitted in a trance-like state, where she gets lost in a land of colors, chosen to fit the feeling of a night in the desert or an afternoon on a lake. Figures reveal themselves with each stitch, driving her representations. Then she stretches her knittings on frames, creating the flatness of a canvas. A humble thread becomes pure color matter and doing so, ennobling the thread using the common language of knitting.
