东画廊荣幸地宣布，将参与2021 年上海西岸艺术与设计博览会并于A219展位呈现王宁德个人项目，集中展示艺术家近年来的创作作品。

Don Gallery is proud to announce that it will be presenting WANG Ningde’s Solo Project at Westbund Art Fair 2021, booth A219. The booth will center on the artist’s recent works.

在柏拉图的“洞穴寓言”中，墙上的影子是囚犯的现实。虽然这个寓言是为了阐释柏拉图的形式论，但最能引起当代人瞩目的是寓言中对墙上阴影的集体迷恋的那种预言性描述。王宁德把这些作品形容为有意的产生“虚幻的感觉”，它们实际上是对摄影作为一个整体的幻觉力量的洞察。《有形之光》系列以独特的视角讨论图像本身的原素，重新定义了墙上谚语般的阴影带给我们的沉迷感觉。

In Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the shadows on the wall are the prisoners' reality. Though the allegory was intended as a means to developing Plato's concept of Forms, what is most striking to our contemporary sensibility is the prophetic description of a collective fixation with shadows on the wall. WANG Ningde has described these works as deliberately generating "an illusory feeling," an insight into the hallucinatory power of photography as a whole. The subject matter he chooses: the sky, trees and clouds, articulate this principle in both representational and abstract guises. As a series, Form of Light offers a unique take on what goes into an image, redefining what it feels like to be mesmerized by the proverbial shadows on the wall.

艺术家将一张完整的图像在透明胶片上有组织的进行碎片化，在光的作用下，通过电脑和人手的劳作过程创造出幽灵般的图像，当暴露于特定的照明时，呈现出完整影子的图像。这些“影子的影子”审视了摄影过程的本质和奥秘，体现了艺术家对影像的见地，这是摄影的过程而非严格意义上的照片，它们仿佛悬浮在现实本身之上的幻影，完成了对世界的隐喻。

WANG's method of composing these works eschews the chemical process of fixing an image to a surface, relying instead on an organized fragmentation of a singular image on a series of transparencies, which when exposed to a specific lighting, creates a composite shadow image. These ‘shadows of shadows’ use photographic processes without creating photographs by definition, illustrating WANG’s insight into photography. They are a representation of reality hovering over reality itself, transforming into a metaphor for the world.

Biography

WANG Ningde (b.1972) currently lives and works in Beijing. WANG’s work has been shown at Galleri Image (Aarhus, Danmark, 2020), National Gallery of Victoria (Australia, 2019), Fort Mason Festival Pavilion (USA, 2107), Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery (New York USA, 2018), Städtische Galerie (Garmany, 2017), Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig (Garmany, 2016), Museum Folkwang (Garmany, 2016), Paramount Pictures Studios (USA, 2015), Alessandria Photo Biennale (Italy, 2011), Limn gallery (USA, 2007) and other institutions.
