Just as a poet cannot simply live in poetry, neither can a painter live in a painting. Painters live in chaotic and ordinary reality, so they make their real daily life poetic and picturesque. Wang Yuping is such a painter. He has been avoiding all kinds of trends to concentrate on studying, reflecting and painting very calmly despite his early fame of holding a personal painting exhibition in National Art Museum of China and of participating in the influential New Generation Art Exhibition (Beijing, China History Museum in 1991) during his undergraduate period, which made him become one of the so-called "New Generation" representative painters. He and his wife Shen Ling (also a painter) live in seclusion on the edge of the city. 2021This painter, who grew up in old Beijing, is introverted and independent, resisting fashion and vulgarity. His life is plain and simple, while his paintings have exquisite and unadorned poetry. I always regard him as a folk poet with a paintbrush. He is not sentimental but good at catching those fleeting moments of ordinariness with his sharp eyes. He has no aristocratic complex, but a literati complex and a commoner standpoint, which have constituted his artistic vision and presented the double intertwined world under his brush. At the same time, it goes beyond the model of general literati and common interests."Painter, Lao Wang" is the most accurate address for him (his wife Shen Ling calls him "Lao Wang head"), and neither Professor Wang nor Mr. Wang is appropriate for him. He always dresses casually. Buckingham Palace in Great Britain may not be the right place for him. He lives in a busy city with a country temperament. He enjoys chatting freely about literature or history, usually accompanied by tea and wine. He and I have always been friends who treat each other on the same footing. It’s rare to find artists like him and his wife who have inward simplicity in the art circles. They lead a pure life, being natural and unaffected. 2016Of course, Wang Yuping is a real professor of the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, followed by a large number of students. The Central Academy of Fine Arts is now an international important place for realistic painting. Objectively speaking, realistic art has declined in most western countries, while in ancient China it had been highly praised by scholars and had created various literary schools since the Northern Song Dynasty governed by literati politically. When the era of civilian politics in China came, realistic art has revived, and politics and civilians are coexisting successfully. After the Reform and Opening-up, art has a process of de-politicization. Hyperrealism, anti-realism and abstract art are spreading in the art world, and the formal language is constantly changing and renovating. As always, Wang Yuping reveries and practices in his spiritual world. His realism is becoming more and more personal, just like his daily monologue, entering the micro-narrative state. His stubborn commoner standpoint and literati complex have constructed a "plain world" for him, a paradise for ordinary people with literati ideals. Each work is like an "autobiographical" one-page diary. Two years ago, I served as the librarian of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. I recommended that he draw a set of books he likes and then hold a special painting exhibition in the library. Collecting some interesting books is our common hobby. I am no longer currently the librarian but continue to be the dean of the College of Humanities. His paintings were all done, while my promise has not been kept yet. Seeing his paintings, I feel that the books in the paintings have life. Some of my books look more cordial once they are painted by him. He gets what he is dreaming for when he doesn't pursue it.
