Material Tales: The Life of Things

这是英国设计博物馆举办的首个巡回专展,意在探讨物质世界的遗产、故事,以及可持续发展的未来。继中央美术学院初次开幕后,本展于南京艺术学院再次登场。展览记叙了一段材料之旅,追溯“物”之起源、功用,及至当下工业与环境之变;沿由此途,我们得以定义现代生活。从创新材料制品到有影响力的地域性项目,观众将看到旨在促进更多尊重与关怀的“物”之设计。前者如素皮革,它们实际诞生于椰壳中;后者典型代表如墨西哥本地玉米品种。展览还将展示设计实验的早期原型,以及大量图片、影像和加工材料,其中包括一些富有远见卓识的设计师之作,如伊姆斯夫妇(Charles and Ray Eames)、卡罗·斯卡帕(Carlo Scarpa)、马塞尔·布劳耶(Marcel Breuer)、埃托雷·索特萨斯(Ettore Sottsass)、Faber Futures、费尔南多·拉波塞(Fernando Laposse)、桑尼·维瑟(Sanne Visser)。地球资源有限,认识到这一现实的设计师和用户希冀更清晰地了解“物”之生成及其成本。作为设计博物馆首个巡回专展,“物物——材料的未来与考古”将于2021年12月8日在中国南京艺术学院开幕,带领观众踏上一场材料之旅——亲历“物”之起源、功用及演化,以探索周遭的物质世界。来自设计博物馆的80多件标志性藏品及研发中的创新材料将一并展出,透过这些展品,观众可了解日常生活用品的复杂制作过程,并对此产生兴趣。从早期批量化家具的试制品,到生物制造的最新实验,本次展览意在探讨这些材料如何塑造现代生活,以及日后我们如何学会更好地利用它们。第一部分“起源”呈现了一些关键材料,如木材、粘土、金属、塑料和纤维,通过微观图像和原初状态展示它们的独特属性。观众可透过各种标志性的日常设计,进一步感受材料的情感特质。
油灯(汉代),陈履生油灯博物馆收藏第二部分“转化”重点发掘批量化生产的影响。当今社会,人们源源不断地生产、加工各类材料,规模惊人,潜能巨大,这种生产方式塑造了现代日常生活。“转化”板块介绍了叹为观止的宇宙飞船、平平无奇的饮料罐,及至引领室内设计变革的扁平包装家具,依循展陈脉络,观众可深入了解现代之“物”如何生成。此外,该版块还呈现了一系列知名设计师、设计公司的经典原作,其中包括伊姆斯夫妇(Charles and Ray Eames)、吉奥·庞蒂(Gio Ponti)、大卫·梅勒(David Mellor)及胶木公司(Bakelite Corporation)等。

《新竹笛》,竹笛/长笛杆件,蔡敬民,20世纪80年代第三部分“影响”板块中,观众将通过祖克塔制影公司(Zuketa Film Production)所摄影片,充分认识材料开采、生态消耗等人类活动,以及它们对全球环境的影响。通过对采矿、橡胶和集约化棉花种植等产业的个案研究,加上物质世界(World of Matter)所制作的巨幅全球开采系统数据图片,观众将深刻感知无限攫取地球资源的严重后果。第四部分“进化”乐观展望了材料的未来,以及设计师如何在有限资源内探寻更智慧和更可持续的工作方式。通过选取几十位当代设计师的作品——包括马勒·乌里韦·福雷斯(Mále Uribe Forés),沃西顿建筑事务所(Waugh Thistleton Architects),辉柏· 福瑞斯(Faber Futures)等,“进化”板块为当今材料设计提供了颇有启发性的案例。从大规模工业干预到专注于手工制作的超本地化项目,该版块试图提醒观者,材料设计是一个不断发展的领域,并在解决紧迫的环境与社会议题方面发挥着重要作用。

The Design Museum presents its first dedicated touring exhibition exploring the legacy, stories and sustainable futures of the material world.Following its opening for the first time at the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, the exhibition will now be opening at the Nanjing University of the Arts. The exhibition charts the journey of the materials that have defined modern life through their origins, uses and evolution to current environmental and industrial consequences.Visitors will see designs that aim to foster greater respect and care for the world around us, from products made from innovative materials such as vegan leather grown from coconut waste to projects with local impact such as native corn species in Mexico.Featuring early prototypes to design experiments, alongside a wealth of images, film and process materials, the exhibition includes work by visionary designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Carlo Scarpa, Marcel Breuer, Ettore Sottsass, Faber Futures, Fernando Laposse and Sanne Visser.As we face the realities of the Earth’s limited resources, designers and users alike are seeking greater clarity around how objects are made and at what material cost. The first dedicated touring exhibition from the Design Museum, Material Tales: The Life of Things opens on Saturday 8 December 2021 at the Nanjing University of the Arts in Nanjing, China and will take visitors on a journey through the origins, uses and evolutions of matter to explore the material world around them.Featuring over 80 iconic exhibits from the Design Museum collection, as well as innovative materials in development today, the exhibition will inform and inspire visitors to understand and care for the complex processes that go into everyday objects. From early examples of mass-produced furniture to the latest experiments in bio-fabrication, the exhibition explores the materials that have defined modern life, and how we might learn to make better use of them in future.The first section of the exhibition introduces some key materials – such as wood, clay, metal, plastic and fibre – illustrating their unique properties through large-scale microscopic images and mounds of raw materials. Featuring the work of a dozen contemporary designers – including Male Uribe Fores, Waugh Thistleton Architects and Faber Futures – the ‘Evolution’ section offers an inspiring overview of material design today. The Design Museum is the world’s leading museum devoted to contemporary architecture and design. Its work encompasses all elements of design, including fashion, product and graphic design. Since it opened its doors in 1989 the museum has displayed everything from an AK-47 to high heels designed by Christian Louboutin. It has staged over 100 exhibitions, welcomed over seven million visitors and showcased the work of some of the world’s most celebrated designers and architects including Paul Smith, Zaha Hadid, Jonathan Ive, Frank Gehry, Eileen Gray and Dieter Rams. On 24 November 2016, The Design Museum relocated to Kensington, west London.
